In the weeks before my marathon I did several half marathons and a 30 km test. They were very promising and I was hoping for a time below 3.20.00. (Half marathon was 1.37.04, 30 km was 2.20.00) The weather was just bad luck and my heart rate monitor prevented me from doing dangerous things.
Ank,

Why don't you consider giving it another try in the next few weeks? Your trained and having one under your belt will make the next one much easier. Given how hot it was on your last attempt, you may break 3:20 without too much trouble.
Just a thought.

Hope my previous message did not come across as a criticism of your advice or of those who use the heart rate monitor. I was just pointing out to John that he is not necessarily at a disadvantage if he doesn't use one.

[Pace for 10K] +10.7 seconds
The training manual on the UK site suggests doubling the pace difference between your 10K and Half Marathon Times.

Nosmo, you are right about the pacing and I appreciate your suggestions.

I have decided to not use the monitor but am going to slow the pace wayyy down just to finish. My distance has been low this past year and I need to get one completed before trying to move the time along faster.

Ank,
You still have plenty of time for another one, provided the weather and conditions will be better for you?

This works out exactly for me.

The difference in pace between my 10k and hm is only 1.5 seconds, so trying to double that would put me under quite quickly.

Perhaps take the difference between your 1k and hm and then take the same interval to the marathon. My hm - 1k pace is 10 seconds. My hm to marathon pace is 9.3 seconds.

I'll have some long distance rowing marathons on water coming up the next weeks, all the training for the marathon will help me.
Thanks for all the replies

Well I finally got around to doing this season’s FM, with only a day left to spare. At 3:20:41.2, it was a crap piece, Slower than last season’s by 1:48.9 (the only other one that I have done). I haven’t done much serious erg work this month and it really showed. Other than my daily 10’ wakeups, which have an average pace of only 2:26 +/- 0:08, I have done only 5 other workouts this month. All five pieces included warm up and cool down in the time given.
4/2: 60’
4/4: 80’
4/6: 100’
4/11: 80’
4/17: 40’
As you can see, I had a good start at the beginning of the month, but for me, the season was basically over after WIRC and I just couldn’t work up any real motivation to continue. Last season, I did my marathon fairly early in March, when I was still in condition, but this time I waited too long.

The marathon itself went like the April training. For the first 16k I was holding around 2:18, which would have given me a solid PB, However, for the next 14k, I was over 2:20, but still in the range to beat my last year time. And in the last 12+k I was getting up into the mid 2:20s, with the 40-42k segment at 2:27.3 and a piddling “sprint” for the last 195m at 2:24.1.

Last season, I took three breaks and I estimated that I lost a total of about 95 seconds. This time, I again took three breaks, but lost about 30” on the first, 45” on the second, and a full minute on the third, a total of about 135 seconds. Also, last season I had good negative splitting, starting in the low 2:20s and ending up with paces under 2:18.

My HR went higher than I would have expected for the slow pace. I had no readings for the first 10k. Then on a hunch, I checked the plug during my first break and found that it was not all the way in. After that, it held at 146-147 for 24k, but climbed into the mid 150s for the last 8k. Last year, I was over half way through (24k) before it reached 140 and there were no end of split readings over 148.

Bob S.

P.S. It did wonders for my nonathlon score. In addition to the 100 point bonus, I picked up another 83 points when the score for the marathon replaced my lowest of the scores of the other nine events. I should go back and try to improve one of those other low ones tomorrow, but I am not quite that crazy.

Still a very good time Bob. Way to stick with it and get your marathon done.

Very nice marathon, Bob.

I'm especially impressed you do that on so little training.
