Are you sitting comfortably and then…

Adequate hydration
Body ready to burn the carbs
Muscles warmed up, heart rate up
Mood music on.
Fan’s, AC, on, coach, other rowers in support
Monitor adjusted, gloves on, feet strapped, Dampener set
Focusing on the workout target
Log card in, pace boat in view.
Deep breath, pick up handle.

Go! :D

Then those numbers come up.
I get fixated by them all and have become a numberologist by default (if such a word exists that explains my obsessive working of them)
Pace, estimated finish time, split times, meters done, meters left, how far to half way, stroke rate. My poor eyes are scanning each value like a maniac.

It does help pass the time and my mental reckoning has improved no end.
Even after at the last frantic stroke, with sweat casacading onto the floor, I can't wait to get the splits low down.

I think the C2 machines and Monitors make a great Mathematics lesson. Exercise the body and brain…… Does anybody else get these number fixations?

Yes B)

Most who are otw rowers from the start I feel frown on this interest for display numbers, for them they are usually just bad news - they should be pulling harder

I don't want to fall into their trap of calling it a fixation though, at least not anymore than calling attentiveness to precise weights a fixation for olympic lifters or powerlifters. It is what determines the sport.

Are hundred meter runners fixated with times? Are high jumpers fixated with height? The yes, ergers are fixated with display readings.

Your not alone.

Get Paul's Erg Monitor software for your computer and you'll have a lot more numbers to stare at. (SPI, stroke length, speed, ratio, average and instentaneous for all numbers)

I've discovered keeping my eyes fixated on the PM monitor is not good for my rowing. I would never do that in a boat, I have to be careful not to stare.

But the math does help keep one interested.

fixated eyes

It only seems natrual to stare at the numbers. I do this to zone out the pain and the feeling of wanting to stop. I even try to do all the calculations in my head while rowing. It is a good thing i imagine.

And in the boat i just stare at the persons back infront of me, as if it were a monitor(unless i am stroke).
