Good enough for college, or just good?

Post by Sweeper » January 24th, 2007, 10:42 pm

Im a 6'6'' (189lbs) 16 year-old junior in high school who has been rowing for about 3 years. ive been the fastest on my team for about a year so im not sure what to compare my times to:

500m = 1:28
1000m = 3:10 (1:35 split)
2000m = 6:51 (1:42 split)
5000m = 18:08 (1:48)

Any ideas on if these are any good? -especially if im interested in rowing in college. - Thanks

Umm...you are 6'6...and still have a year left in high school...colleges will love that...use times on concept2 and other high end high schools and some collegiate programs as your competition if you high school doesnt have any rowers close enough to your strength and speed..at 6'6 I doubt you will ever be lightweight, so maybe consider lifting (if you dont already) so that you can get some extra strength into each stroke...other than that keep erging and YES it is good enough for college, but the harder you workout now, the better the schools will be when recruitment comes!

There have been several really good threads on this subject over the past year or two, so you may want to search back. If you look at the 2006 rankings for 16yr hwt men, you are in the top 50% but below top 25% (6:39). So that is good, but not great yet. My memory from the other threads was that a 6:30 as a Hwt would give you a good shot at getting recruited. Xeno had a blog on this last year and that might have been what he said. But as Elamonta says, at 6'6" you are big and should be getting much stronger as you fill out in the next few years, and that could lower your times quite a bit.

Good luck and keep up the hard work.

Sweeper,

In addition to MB's great comments, go out to ergscores.com, and use some of the links and logs to register your progress and get it in front of coaches.

In order to be recruited as a heavyweight, most colleges (good ones) will look for sub 6:30, and the better ones (IV leagues) will probably look for sub 6:20. A kid on our team is going to Harvard with a 6:18.

sweeper, i am in the same boat as you, being a junior, 6'3 175 pounds.

With a year left you should have lots of time to lower your erg scores, especially over the summer.

I would advise you to start talking with coaches at possible schools you are interested in, and keep them updated with your progress.

I am a senior in high school and have been on a couple of recruiting trips. I pull 6:27 and from experience i know that they will expect you to be under 6:30. Don't worry though i am sure you can get there just put a lot of mileage in, start lifting if you don't already and you should see a big drop in erg score.
