ELBOW TENDINITIS

Post by robhen » December 31st, 2006, 12:01 am

I had elbow tendonitis a couple of months out from the World Masters Games in 2005. I still get a twinge.
I had a couple of cortizone injections, anti-inflammatries and was using cream as well as going to the physio. I was prepared to compete with this injury. My doctor was not prepared to give me any more cortizone as this softens the tendons.
Obviously, this is an overuse injury - your volume is quite high. The best analogy Ive seen is that the tendons get damaged like frayed rope.
There is a lot of stuff on the net on causes and treatment.
My advice would be to ensure an accurate diagnoses, perhaps with the aid of an MRI or any other accurate xray, go to a physio and get some treatment pretty quickly.
If you are not training for anything in particular do some cross-training as this is an overuse injury.
I add a caveat - I am athelete so seek professional advice, what do I know?

on your drive, do you keep your arms straight and as relaxed as possible?

Both lateral and medial epicondylitis is a tough combination.

As for causes . . .

The lateral epicondylitis may be due to "winging it," letting your elbows drift away from your body at the finish. Think about keeping your arms tight to your body at the end of the drive.

The medial epicondylitis may have two causes. It may be due to taking the catch with your arms not entirely straight and relaxed, as noted above. Or it may due to using your arms too early in the drive.

Have someone look at your stroke to spot what's happening.

Re cortizone & tendons. I was playing soccer and started having ankle problems, so I cad a couple of rounds of cortizone shots. It really really weakons tendons. After the shots posterior tendon in my right ankle ruptured while I was walking quickly to catch a bus. It took me 2 years to convince folks I hada problem and get it fixed.

Moral: One cortizone shot may be ok, don't do 2. Cutting back on your meters is way better than surgery.

I have tendonitis in my left elbow. I wear one of those Ace Neoprene elbow supports whenever doing anything where I think I might hurt it. This includes rowing. I think that rowing is a low risk but I have to allow for times when I might lapse into bad form for part of my row - one lapse could be enough to trigger some swelling. Anyway, the neoprene support seems to work for me.

Tennis elbow braces

Post by billw » January 1st, 2007, 12:29 am

Hello,

Be vareful with this - I was off for 5 months in 2003 due to elbow problems.

The neoprene supports work for me too.

Good physiotherapist was far more useful than Doctors in helping me with this.

Also known as "Tennis Elbow" straps - available from chemists and sports shops (Australia)
