hello all,
im not usually one to brag, but after pulling my best 2k ever, i just had to let some one know. after spending most of my mornings sculling/rowing/erging this summer, i was really excited to see my hard work pay off when i pulled a 6:48.8 2k this afternoon.
anyways, im a big fan of the forum and happy erging/sculling/rowing to all of you!

500m Progress
Hi guys.
Up until a month ago I'd only managed to shave 1.9 seconds off my 1:31.7 PB 500m of two years ago. I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever get below 1:30 . However, in the last four weeks I've concentrated on my starts and been keeping the PM3 display on Watts/ Ave. Watts without worrying about the pace. I was rapt last night when I flicked it back to see I'd made 1:28.2
Maybe I'm not too old to do a 1:27.0 ... even just once!
I agree about the forum. It's given me motivation to take erging more seriously.

Nicely done, John.
Since you were watching watts, were you working on a certain goal watt level?
I haven't done a time trail 500m in a while but last winter I did do 500m sprints with a certain goal watt level in mind - like 320w. I knew that a certain wattage gave me a certain pace so I hung on to that watt level each stroke.

Tried a 6k today just to get something in for the season other than the first part of a 40' piece. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I improved on my best time of last season, so it is a lifetime PB, since I had never done a 6k before last season. I was not expecting to get PBs anymore, since it is obvious that I have reached the point that age is taking me down faster than training can improve my performance.
I even beat Dean's recently posted 6k time by a couple of seconds, but, since he is at a couple of thousand feet higher elevation, it would have to be a lot more than a couple of seconds to count for much.
In any event, here are the data:
3/10/06: 26:03.5
7/28/06: 25:55.5
If we can believe:
http://www.concept2.com/05/training/com ... ds_all.asp
This is a new WR for 80+ M or F, Hwt or Lwt.
But I expect Dean to be clobbering it any day now - especially if he can do the piece at a lower altitude.
Other data:
wt before trial: 165#
wt after trial: 164#
wt after rehydration and breakfast (at 12 noon): 166#
Altitude: 4000 feet
Temperature: About 73 degrees F. (in room with AC)
Relative humidity: about 50%

Jim I set myself a target of rowing a 1:29.5 500m (whisker better than my PB of a week or so earlier) and converted that to an average power of 488W. I created a mini sprint training programme where, over the course of a week, I wanted to include one "test" sprint (the hardest for each day) averaging 85%, 90%, 95% and 100% of the 488W on days 1, 3, 5 and 7 respectively. On the days in between I just did a couple of "hardish" 1Ks or 2Ks and practised a few sprint starts (aiming for maximal power & technique). On each of the sprint tests I made sure I finished with the average power reading above the figure I was aiming for. The 95% one ended up being about 97.5% and I felt I had some in reserve. Felt good for the 100% one and managed to keep the average power above 520W for all but the first few and last few strokes.jjpisano wrote:Nicely done, John.

Also did some gym work on a couple of the days - sets of pullups to failure, barbell thrusters, one-legged squats and stuff, working for time to keep the HR up.
Seriously motivated to get under 1:28 now ... maybe 1:27.6 (520W), which I would have thought just a joke a month ago

I had sort of kissed off the idea of personal bests. Last year was my first year of real training and I made the most of it. This year, I figured on just holding the brakes on the aging process as much as I could, but I was pessimistic about doing any improving - especially since I am putting in only about a third as much time on the erg as I did last year in August. I did a half marathon this morning, just to fill in one more gap in my nonathlon list, and was pleasantly surprised to hang on to a 1:33:55.7, a 1:41.4 improvement over last year. I was particularly pleased that it gave me my first over 1000 nonathlon score for this season. With nine events now entered I am finally up to fourth place. Yes, yes, I know - nonathlon has a bias that favors age, but what the hell, I'll take whatever I can get. I still have the marathon left, but I am in no rush to do it - there are still almost 8 months left in the season and it would only give me the 100 bonus points and possibly a few more. What I really need to work on is the short distances; the nonathlon scores clearly show that they are my weak area. The trouble is, I have always hated sprints. I feel much better going for the long haul.

(this is getting boring (the ranking that is),please find anyone you
know -who qualfies for adaptive rowing 0
so there is some competition
i KNOW i am not that good
its just a lack of 'players in the field'.)

Bob,
Congratulations on your PB and possible WR! The fact that you are rowing so well at double my age, gives me great inspiration!!

I hope to know how that first sub-7 feels some day.
I've changed your time from a slow pace to a great 2K time!
