On another note - it’s not often I feel small!!!! There was huge fellas in that race!
I have seen a photo of the men's 500m podium. None of them would look out of place in a scrum

Nice work on your pb, they all count. As mentioned it can't be the easiest environment to pb in. Good luck in your otw race!

On the back of my recent period of training I had a go at a 10,000m today, getting a PB by 18.4s. I was a little too ambitious at the start. It was as gruelling as a 10k ever is!

Code: Select all

Love it. Most people would tell you to rest after a successful competition, but you sit down and smash out a great result and even greater PB improvement.

I can feel the pain in the last 4k, but it was worth it.

Thanks all :)

No shame in having a day off! I've had a quiet week what with tapering so it's nice to have a proper dead-leg feeling tonight. I've been reminded why I don't do a 10k TT very often, it's an awful experience every time, far worse than a 2k (which is over quicker, at least!) but satisfying to get done. Weirdly my forearms were burning and cramping for the last 4 or 5k. I know sore forearms can be a grip or form issue but I'd like to think I know one end of an erg from the other... Also I'm not sure what's going on with my HR compared to the 10k from 2 years ago - whether the lower finishing and average HR reflects better fitness, the mild covid I had a month ago, +2 years of age, or something else.

I'm a new member of Peterborough City RC, and I don't manage to get out on the water often. It looks like I will have to miss the Christmas head race next weekend unless I can get cover for work :( I look forward to meeting you soon! And any other forum members at a future competition too :D

I managed a 2K PB today at the BRICs in Birmingham getting an improvement of 0.9s with a time of 6:45.6. It was my first ever indoor rowing competition.
Many congrats Ed - you didn't mention that it also earned you a silver medal - so congrats on that too!

Also, 1 second improvement for me too 6:37.7.
And same to you Anthony - very well done indeed.

You were in a quality race and, for me, Jim Berriman who won your race in 6:04.5 was amazing to watch. He was also on a very close race for the 500m coming 2nd with a 1:17.9. He was behind me in the coffee queue later in the day and is a proper giant - towered over double gold Jeremy Martin who I was with at 6'4" so I'd guess somewhere 6'9" to 7'? Best finish of the day was Tony Larkman's charge from 5th to 1st in the last 250m of the 55-59 in 6:31.3 - very exciting to watch.

As usual I much enjoyed watching the action and it was great that the event was so well supported this year - growing back a bit now, though still well down (<2000) compared to the best BIRC days of 4000 athletes. Its also great for me that its part of FitFest as I can go and watch some weight lifting or cross fit as well. Having said that there are some significant issues that I think they need to address. Key one being the lack of facilities for the athletes - there are none, just the exhibition space toilets - no showers, no changing rooms - I'm surprised they get away with that. There was also no "cool down" area which seems a serious omission. And there isn't enough provision of seating for the Spectators and athletes. I'm not moaning about the price, but for my £32+ I expect to be able to get a seat and there were times when that was very difficult. There were 60 race ergs and for many races the majority occupied. Maybe its growing back big enough to warrant a bigger hall !?!
There were a number of no shows - although I saw them there - Eg Graham Benton (back injury I heard) and Sam Blythe entered but sitting 2 rows in front of me for his race! If you look at the results sheets the number of DNS is quite significant for some races.

I'll look forward to seeing Stu back in the mix next year ....and maybe even Sascha can get over!
Congrats to everyone else that took part too.

Absolutely agree re 10k, you certainly know about it for a few days after!

I am also new, joined after L2R course early summer. Still very much a novice but it’s a great place to get loads of time in the boats. It’s been difficult to get out lately with all the bad weather and flooding so crossing fingers hard for the head race. Alot of the boats got snapped up fast so my usual double partner and me have had to double up with another couple of novicerowers and going to give it a go in a 4+. What could possibility go wrong! :)

@mpx - I also watched the larkman win. Was an astonishing finish. I thought Stephen Bailey had that wrapped up then out of nowhere a 200 metre sprint at 1:32 pace! Strong stuff for sure! Completely agree about the cooldown area. I was laid out on the floor by the warm up zone and next to me was Jim berriman throwing up with a medic looking after him. He certainly put it all into the erg. No way I could have done a 500m race after that! I think somewhere to collect ourselves after would be very welcome.

The sad thing is, I missed a great opportunity to meet many people and team mates with the same interest and mindset for no real reason (except very costly 6:xx minutes   ).
I think your first line there nails it. I row on my own in a dinghy garage, anyone in my life finds it all a little out the ordinary. Which is probably why the majority of us here embrace it. But yes, you'd need a mini holiday to justify the travel!
I too train alone in my garage, hence why I'm quite active online via this forum, instagram, FB, and as part of the Sub7 team, because otherwise, without the sense of community and sharing of experiences (highs AND lows) on this torturous yet beautiful machine, I doubt I'd have the mental fortitude to continue pushing on my own.

I'm contemplating making the trip out to Boston for February 16th's CRASH-B championships, and may even have BRIC 2025 on my list for consideration next year. I'm of the mind that the conditions are most optimal for PB attempts in my own garage where I have complete control over the environment, so would largely be making these trips to meet the folks I've connected with on the interwebs over the last couple years, and less so with the express goal of PB'ing or placing anywhere.

Well that would make for a hotly contested age group if you were in the mix! Pb material or not. I was surprised that athletes from over Europe and even the US make the trip over, yet here I am grumbling about a five-six hour drive for it...

Thanks Mike, I'll be there next year, it's not felt right missing it this year, although that storm would have made things interesting in getting down to Birmingham.

I also need to meet up, as I can't not actually speak to you again.

While I agree with the controlling your own environment, I actually found I always hit PBs at competitions. You get that adrenaline rush and the overall atmosphere seems to help. I remember hitting a new PB for several straight comps.

I've always been a bit surprised by that. Racing starts, hot dry air and adrenaline working against me have always been an issue, but having said that my 2k PB was set at a race, so maybe you've got a point :D

Different strokes for different folks, I guess! As more of an introvert and one who generally shies away from being in the spotlight (certainly in-person anyways), I could definitely see myself being overwhelmed in a packed gym with 60+ ergs humming and coxswains/spectators shouting. If I end up doing CRASH-Bs in Feb, should be an eye-opening experience one way or another.
