6x500 1r as a 2k predictor?

Post by Erger2222 » November 20th, 2024, 7:59 pm

I did this workout today and went 1:43.5. Is that an ok goal for a 2k? Thanks in advance

Imo it's possibly a good prediction but in reality 500m isn't comparable to a 2k. I can cope relatively well with one min rest, but others may struggle so it can be deceptive.

I'd recommend doing more than 750m, preferably 1k, for a better understanding. Maybe try doing 1k x 3 1r?

Nothing like a 2k indicator than going out and doing a 2k. If you finished feeling like you could've gone quicker, it's still a benchmark.

Personally, no physical endeavour has left me feeling the way I did after my last 2k test, no workout is comparable. FWIW, my 5k workout "predictors" suggested I should've been somewhat quicker than my PB.

It all depends if you have used the same stroke rate for the 6 x 500 that you would for a 2k. If you used a higher rate then it's not a predictor for 2k.

Best way to predict a 2k is to do one.

For me, 8x500m/1:30r is about 1.5s/500m faster than my 2k.

I say it's an OK predictor but I was always able to do it faster than 2K pace. As Stu mentioned, longer intervals are a little more telling. For me, 4x1K with 5'R was always about one second slower than 2K and the closest predictor.

Its not perfect, but if you don't push the rating above what you can maintain in a 2k, it is usually achievable. That said, mentally it is a lot less taxing, to match it on a 2k takes much more grit and going off too fast will have a bigger impact.
