RowAlong training plans?

Post by Rowan McSheen » October 30th, 2023, 7:51 am

As in here, the homepage: https://rowalong.com/

And here, the YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@rowalong

After the Beginners Pete Plan I'm pondering whether to follow a plan (get fit and burn calories look good to me) or just do a lucky dip when it's a rowing day. I've done a couple of his plans before and enjoyed them, although I usually just take the workout and only row along to the video if programming the PM looks like too much hassle.

I think he's angling mostly for fitness and fun rowers although there does seem to be some stuff for more competitive ergers.

Just wondering if anyone else is doing his workouts or plans and whether there is scope for a thread and chat?

I just started the BPP again. I've done it 2x on the rower and once on the skierg. I'll check out these plans later. It would be cool to do something different.

Sorry I don't use any of the videos - or any training plan for that matter - But I did take a look/see at what's he's got available and it looks like a nice mix of things, and is something a bit different.

If I was inclined to watch something rather than to listen to music and stare at the pm5/phone slightly obsessively, I'd be tempted.

It seems as though most of the community may be on Facebook, if you're interested in findings others already doing his plans and chat about them. Alternatively, this could be the beginnings of a "Beginner Pete Plan" style thread, if you want to post about what you're doing - and then maybe others could join too?

I use Rowalong videos for rows 60 minutes and over. John has a great skill in being very fluent with a diverse subject range that makes the time pass very quickly. I would never have done a HM without him!

I am using the workouts and plans quite regularly, as an orientation and inspiration, but also following the videos directly (especially for higher spm workouts, as the video helps me to keep the rythm)

I very much enjoy the rowalong concept and would like to see it going on.

That's what I'm trying to find out. I'm not a fan of the Facebook format for this kind of thing but might take a look.

Other plans like Pete etc while excellent are progressive but my best performances are 20 years or so behind me. I'm just in it for the fitness these days ("managing decline") and the good thing about the RowAlongs imho are the variety. I also find that his guidance for pace and spm suits me well. So my approach now is to take random workouts alternating low and mid tier with the occasional top tier.

If anyone's interested today was mid tier: 30 mins stroke rate pyramid in 4-min chunks with a final 2 mins at 28 spm and 2k pace (achieved, just). Reasonably consistent on the way up and down. The time flew by.
