A silly but annoying thing (rant)
A silly but annoying thing (rant)
Background: the last few years I've been rowing only on the Model E at the gym at work, while my Model C at home gathers dust.
Yesterday:
I walk into the locker room, change, and go out to the gym proper, at which point I can't help but notice a super hi-viz orange 3-D printed cell phone holder thing on top of the PM. Unlike the "I could maintain any chosen pace, even with the PM covered" folks, I focus 99% of my attention on the PM display to keep my desired pace (and give my mind something to do as the meters roll down). Anything else around is a distraction that would bother me, especially a bright orange thing an inch or two above the display, so I pulled the holder off and put it in one of the small "keep your small personal items here while you work out" cubbyholes.
I don't know if the person using it forgot to take it with them, but I sure hope they don't expect to keep it there permanently, because unless I have no other options at all, I'm not going to row with that thing on the PM. It will be interesting to see if it's back when I return for my Wednesday session. If so, I'll have to reconsider all options...
Rant over.

The original one is black, and thus less distracting?

Re: A silly but annoying thing (rant)
I can understand your frustration, and the ergs should be left as C2 intended them to be if they are in a gym.
Hopefully it's just a mistake by someone who left it there.

My rowErg is equipped with an adjustable clamp below the PM5. No holder on top of PM5. Delivery was January last year.mitchel674 wrote: ↑August 30th, 2023, 12:10 pmNew RowErgs come delivered with a black cradle/holder on top of the PM5.Dangerscouse wrote: ↑August 30th, 2023, 2:21 amI can understand your frustration, and the ergs should be left as C2 intended them to be if they are in a gym.

Are you sure? Mine (Jan 2022) came with a tablet/phone holder UNDERNEATH the PM5, and ordering the phone holder with it actually triggered a call from C2 if I knew that the tablet holder was now standard....mitchel674 wrote: ↑August 30th, 2023, 12:10 pmNew RowErgs come delivered with a black cradle/holder on top of the PM5.

2021 RowErgs came with a black phone holder that fits on top, 2023 RowErgs have a built-in one underneath the PM5. I'm not sure when the switchover was. They are really helpful for displaying apps with more data points than are standard on the PM5. If a distraction, the add-on ones can be removed while rowing. I find it helpful to train through distractions though, because distractions arise in race conditions and it's helpful to know how to refocus.

+1. You've got to be prepared for the unexpected, admittedly it's not that important to everyone, but I do like to challenge myself in different ways.

That's interesting to know about the RowErgs! Having a built-in phone holder underneath the PM5 sounds like a great upgrade for convenience. I agree with your perspective on training through distractions. It's a valuable skill, especially for competitive scenarios. Do you have any other tips or insights for optimizing rowing performance?Elizabeth wrote: ↑August 30th, 2023, 3:24 pm2021 RowErgs came with a black phone holder that fits on top, 2023 RowErgs have a built-in one underneath the PM5. Re: A silly but annoying thing (rant)
I agree wholeheartedly re training through distractions, when everything is easy (i.e. less than an all out effort) completing is unlikely to be a problem most of the time, however when trying for a best time, any distraction can become a limiting factor. That seam that causes PITA to arise, the erg making a 'funny noise', someone standing behind you, etc, etc.
Learning to deal with distractions helps one to be more son cistent when trying to set a new PB, at whatever level IMHO.
P.S. I probably would have looked twice to say the least at something bright orange on my ergh too!!!

Age 61, on 2/01/22 I rowed 115,972m 11hrs 17m 57s and raised £19k for https://www.havenshospices.org.uk/ Thanks for all the support

Honeybees swarming in the boat rack are a distraction. Those who attempt to conduct a symphonic info wall of bt devices while pulling the chain in their boxroom or garage really shouldn't complain about distractions! Numbers scrolling so consoling? I have both a bright orange silicone lobster and a poison-green-squidgy-frog finger ring hanging from a gooseneck music stand light next to my PM. Face it folks. IR is sensory deprivation.
