I used to have the fan on my back, but I think I prefer it on my front as it 'feels' more beneficial, but it probably isn't.

I have it aimed at my left side, angled slightly more anterior, as I am on slides the fan is a constant, I am not moving in and out of the airstream.

Mine came today. I did a cheeky 8k, was refreshing. Was less wet than normal. Wasn’t too noisy. It’s a Sealy 20”, linked previously. Nicely built. A good investment. Might try it from behind, ooooh matron

I tried the fan blowing on my back & I think, like you Stu, it feels better blowing in my face. Maybe my arm pits were a tad drier?? but definitely face-on feels better.

What a buy! What a beauty! Sturdy case, heavyweight 10-foot cord, and the outlet pivots tightly /w conveniently-spaced locating detents. The only thing strange about it is that from "0" (off), the power switch rotates through "3-2-1" (rather than the more intuitive "1-2-3"). A setting of "1" seems to be perfect, but I'll be wiser when I row tomorrow morning. One more thing: it's quiet... not silent, but close enough for me.

A cheap fan does a fine job. After all it's a tiny little motor and if used only for rowing won't be getting used that much. The bigger the fan the better I've found, as in just go to your local hardware type store that does cheap goods and likely you'll want the biggest they do. I got mine in 'The Range' in the UK.
I've found that the fan is only absolutely needed in summer on the rower as you do get a bit of airflow moving up and down the slide, but to be honest it's nicer to have on at low even when temperatures are cooler. Whereas indoor cycling you need one (at least) blasting at max even when it's really cold.

For me that's different. Even at 12°C in my basement, I need the 20" fan even only doing steady states. Without it's getting really sweaty. Not talking about TTs, without fan I could swim home afterwards

I find that the motion going up and down the slide evaporates just enough sweat in the cold to keep me cool enough to not need excess water or have my HR go sky-high although I still sweat a fair bit, enough to warrant a headband to keep sweat out of my eyes. That being said it still tends to be nicer to have it on rather than off and does lower the sweat-count somewhat.
I suppose what I really meant is I could get by without a fan in the winter/cooler weather, but it's essential when the weather is a bit warmer.

I use a simple fan combined with a Wahoo Headwind. It is expensive, but what I like about the headwind is that it is heartrate controlled, so it will blow harder when needed. And it puts in a lot of air.

Unfortunately most free standing fans don't really give you enough technical info on them, maybe just the Wattage if you are lucky. Extraction fans give you a Wattage and a CFM so you know how much air they actually move.
I put a 450mm one in the roof instead of the attic hatch for the summer, its a couple of hundred Watts and I calculated it evacs the entire volume of the air in the house every 6 minutes. This coupled with the fact its pumping out the hot air in the attic at the same time due to the long run tin roof iron means its a whole lot more efficient than a heat pump.
I have found for exercise you need something pretty big if you want to cover your whole body and keep everything in the even airflow.
Cannot go past the 750mm industrial floor fan I'm using. Used it on the rower, angled it for the bike and even use it when running the motorcycle in the garage.

I bought a couple of Vornado fans at Costco a while back and put one on each side. Keeps me plenty cool.
