The worst enemy on the erg is surely the "projected finish" screen on the PM. It plays mind games and I spend the whole first 80% of a row going too fast as I don't want to "fall behind" even though I know that it's skewed and one always makes up the seconds in the last 10/20% of the row.

This means that I often fail time trials because I go out too hard and row ahead of PB pace for the first half of the piece, leaving nothing left in the tank. This happened on Friday when I HD'd a 10k PB attempt at 8987 meters (pathetic).

Today, I focused on staying calm and staying moderate. Ironically, the mental reset meant I rowed the first 9k at basically the same splits as my failed attempt on Friday, and had plenty left in the tank for a fast final k. This smashed both my PB and my target PB (by >20" and >10" respectively). I'm also happy to say I have comfortably broken 37.30 for the 10k. I guess the next stop would be sub 37, but that is miles away...

Nice story and give PB, well done 👌

For me the projected finish is helping much. I use watts as well as projected finish as these are much more precise compared to current split time. I know the most efficient way to row a distance is a flat pace. So I use projected time to stay on a flat pace throughout and turn the screw at the end if something is left. As projected time equals the target PB in that case, it is very likely that nothing is left in the tank for a sprint, if target is set overconfident as usual 😂

Great work and I love you are already talking about the next milestone on sub 37. This was paced well and you had a lot in the tank with the strong finish. This shows how different both your mental and physical being can be on any given day.

Clearly the approach helped, you were 2.1S down on a 37:30 at 6k, so managed to banish this from your mind. On the earlier attempt, were you targeting a projected finish of 37:40 or 37:30? If the latter, you were probably a bit more conservative this time. I am amazed how much our minds lie to us. On a 5k race I slowed in some splits 9S below target pace around the 4k mark convinced that I would be luckty to finish and that even this was not sustainable. In the event I finished with splits 4S below the target, so no where near as close to death's door as my mind was reporting!

Great stuff Rob, and I really love that last 2k. Don't underestimate how far off sub 37 is. You are capable of surprising yourself.

Think of it this way, 2.2 seconds off each 2k split up to 8k isn't too ridiculous a suggestion with a finish like that, but you'd getting down to virtually 37:10.

I managed a PB on my 10k today. Have managed a new PB each week for the last month starting at 42.23 on the 2nd May and hitting 39.49 today. Wasn’t really attempting a time trial and kept it steady at 24spm throughout so pretty chuffed with the progress. I’m definitely benefiting from training on fewer days a week whilst keeping the volume up.
