Sorry, we need more info, how much rowing have you done, how many sessions a week would you like to do, what is the longest row that you have done several times, what pace are you rowing at currently (and for what distance, preferably a longer and a shorter distance), how long is the vacation, what is your height and weight, what is your main sport and at what level?

That should give us something to comment on!
56, lightweight in pace and by gravity. Currently training 3-4 times a week after a break to slowly regain the pitiful fitness I achieved a few years ago. Free Spirit, come join us http://www.freespiritsrowing.com/forum/

But rowing is done on water. You don't want your style ruined by the erg, nor torn muscle in gyms.

Vacation is vacation, the nine month rowing season is long enough as is and you have plenty of better things to do.

Basically the erg is just a toy for oaps like me who need to keep fit without risk of falling off their bikes and certainly can't go freeclimbing. But in summer we need the sea to swim in, can't fall off that either.
