I have had past heart issues as well. I am 78 a YO male. I have a very nice Garrmin watch, but I never rely in its heart rate function when rowing. I use a Polar OH1 Strap with the Polar Flow app.
I have used many wrist based HR sensors over the years. They were all fairly accurate at resting HR, but absolutely under recorded anything by 30 to 40% at rates above 100 bpm. The Polar device never misreported my heart rate ever at any exertion level.
If you are concered about your heart rate when rowing, I would recommend the Polar OH1 optical sensor. It is far less expensive than the Polar H10 or H9 sensors (I have all of them and have used them).
