Just an update. I did my 2k yesterday at a competition hosted by the rowing clubs in Utah. I pulled a 6:33.1, so I just missed my goal. Thanks for all your advice; it helped a lot.
Given the slight delays in starting, you will have gone a lot closer to 6:32 in a normal TT. Well done on the result, and I suspect you'll be sub 6:30 in the near future if you still want to achieve it

Awesome score and so close to your goal! I remember chasing 6:30 - it's a great goal to reach and I am sure you will get that soon. Did you pace it well and were you completely spent at the end?
My pacing definitely could be improved  I got caught up in the adrenaline and ended up settling in at 1:35 instead of 1:37, so I hit 1k at about 3:10. Then at around 1200, I started blowing up. My pace got up to high 1:40s, but I managed to get it back down to around 1:40 at the end. I'd say I was pretty maxed out, as I spent 20 minutes dry heaving and could barely walk after.

Huge congrats on the PB. 👏👏👏 Takes a lot of training and huge effort to get close to 6:30. Remember, at that pace every extra second off takes an unfair amount of extra effort.
That said, you are a <6:30 2k now. You’re race is classic where most of us have been. I read somewhere (probably on this site) that one second too fast in the first 500 = 2-3 seconds slower in the last 500.
1200m is the (my) horrible place - the body is screaming ‘what are you doing to me?!!? Stop it NOW.’ Well done on pushing through. I find though at an even pace, not going off too fast, that at 1200 there’s enough oxygen for my brain to say, ‘You can do another 300 at this pace, and then there’s only 500 to go - and you’re not going to stop in the last 500.’
Dry heaving, curled up on the floor and making weird noises as well? 👍👍Shows you maxed out. Well done on that, whatever your time - not everyone can do that.
Your payback for doing the first 500 in 1:35 was those 1:40+ times. You paid back 6 seconds so net loss 4 seconds - there’s your achievable time of 6:29.

Sounds identical to my first ever competition. I was settled for too long at 1:34/5, and by 800m in, I was already fading. I think I ended on 1:48 pace, as there was literally nothing but pride keeping me going.

In reality, I was planning for a 1:38 pace at best, so it was always a disastrously fast pace, but adrenaline has a habit of making you feel invincible

OK, so a true 100% effort. The pacing prob cost you a few seconds but we all have done it - most many times, especially at a race, you get all pumped up and plans aren't followed.
