Post by sparkysx » April 6th, 2022, 6:33 pm

Hi,

Just wondering, when people set their personal best times, is that on level 10?

I haven't recieved my machine yet, I ordered it last week so, should recieve it some time after the 11th April.

Thanks!

Hi,

No, that is done on the same drag factor which is individually matching best. You have to find out for yourself.
Perhaps look for yt videos about the drag factor, there are many - Dark hourse, Training tall I would recommend.

Sparky, welcome to the forum. : )

Sakly is 100% correct.

Search this forum (or the C2 web site) for "Drag Factor." There's lots of information out there, but the bottom line is that you almost certainly don't want to "Put it at 10," even though if you go to the gym you'll just just about everyone else doing that. They don't know what they're doing. It's just that simple. Read up on it, and you'll know how what to do - it's actually quite simple.

Good Luck

See https://www.concept2.com/news/damper-and-drag-olympians

Even highly trained Olympians do not train or race at Damper 10.

Drag Factor around 130 (setting 3-4) seems to offer the best compromise betwen Force and Speed, so allow the highest possible power delivery. There will be some variation according to age, sex, strength and size.

If you need to learn to row, low drag can help.

2024: stroke 5.5W-min@20-21. ½k 190W, 1k 145W, 2k 120W. Using Wods 4-5days/week. Fading fast.

Welcome to the forum.

Drag factor is subjective, so have a play around and find what works best for you. Always remember drag is just a means to an end to make you row most efficiently, and this might be 100 or it might be 150. It's very unlikely to be 150+, but it's not completely out of the question.

Personally I row everything at circa 125.
51 HWT; 6' 4"; 1k= 3:09; 2k= 6:36; 5k= 17:19; 6k= 20:47; 10k= 35:46 30mins= 8,488m 60mins= 16,618m HM= 1:16.47; FM= 2:40:41; 50k= 3:16:09; 100k= 7:52:44; 12hrs = 153km

They're more likely to train on a coach prescribed drag factor that's designed to match the boat (single, pair, quad or eight) that they'll be rowing on the river or lake.

Thanks very much for all the replies, looking at various videos on youtube regarding it now.

This is a good video by the founder

I'm fast twitch and prefer a lower DF than most. After 5 years, I still play mix it up sometimes, but I'm pretty much 115 +/-10

Argument and explanation from and of first causes (in this case forces acting on a boat hull in a fluid medium) are very useful in demystifying a widely-used but poorly understood sport-specific simulator. Thank you Citroen and James G. for illuminating the origin and utility of df in several recent threads. 👍
