From gym to RowErg

Hello. I'm about to buy a RowErg. I am 42 years old, 72 kg, 1.76 cm. I train 2-3 times a week in the gym, weight training. My idea is to add 2-3 days a week rowing training at home with a RowErg. What do you think? Will I notice benefits in muscle gain and better aerobic fitness? My goals are to gain muscle and lose some fat. Greetings from Argentina

You will see better aerobic fitness for sure by rowing a few times a week, especially if you do longer rows. The rower isn't going to build much muscle but you are weight training 3 days a week to cover that. You will burn calories on the rower that might help to show the muscles you gain more but you sound fairly lean already. The combination of weights and rowing is excellent if you want to stay fit and have overall fitness.

You will see better aerobic fitness for sure by rowing a few times a week, especially if you do longer rows. That's about the age when you quit the Gym and switch to the Erg.

Not been to a gym now in 20 years, the Erg is all I use now as you just primarily concerned with keeping the weight off with the Cardio. Sure its good to do weights as well but the thought of getting in a car now to go do the gym and back just doesn't work for me. In the 30 minutes wasted in the travel to the Gym and back, I can do a 30 minute row in my garage instead and its also there 24/7 for a row anytime you want.

Rowing at home however lacks social interaction and its VERY hard to stay motivated on the rower long term.

Hahaha. It's true. You've already given up on having thebest body of the summer, and start to care more about over all health and cardiovascular conditioning

Hi, same here, 41, (body)weight training 3 times a week and added the rower mid of January 👌🏻
My gym is only 5min by feet, so I have no time loss like Carl. Anyway, I trained several years at home, so equipment and self motivation is no problem for me.
I think this is a very good combination. Even after only two weeks I feel the positive effects of rowing - and I am in good shape and fitness already.

I have found the rower is great (eventually) for muscle tone, and separation, rather than bulk. Admittedly this takes a lot of time but it did happen for me.

In a certain way you will get stronger, but it's more of a robust strength and not adding plates to a barbell type of strength.

That's why I think that keep going to the gym twice a week will be a good complement to rowing.

For sure, rowing will not build muscle like weights or bodyweight training. But it complements well as nearly full body workout to build aerobic capacity and can also be used to implement very hard intervals if you like. On a rower its up to you how hard it gets 😄

If you have the funds and space the skierg is a great compliment to the rowerg.

Weights is definitely a great complement, but I'm also a massive advocate of Pilates or yoga. Rowing is tough on the core girdle, and compresses your hips so strengthening and opening up this area is really useful.
