PP 1.5 - hard distance. Decided to go for a 5K PB - got it by 8 seconds. Onwards and upwards

Well done Robert,

Post in the PBs thread too. We all love to see a PB. 8s is a big improvement in the 5k.

Hi I’ve done indoor rowing on and off for about 20 years, used to be able to do a 34 min 10k, damper setting 10 (I now know better ;o)) I have rowed a little on the water, a long time ago. I have had a bit of coaching.

I’m 51, 6’5”, 100kg. I have trained at a high level since I was 11, used to be a competitive cyclist for quite a few years(time trials). Up until January 2019 I was doing a lot of swimming, strength training, high intensity training, spinning, body pump. I was very fit 6% body fat. Then I had multiple brain seizures with complications along with a suspected unidentified autoimmune disease, I was in hospital for 3 months and had to learn to walk again. Good news is I’ve been stable for six months now and getting better all the time. I’ve got quite a bit of my muscle mass back, I was very wasted.

A year ago I couldn’t even row for 3 minutes on an erg at the gym. I couldn’t engage my right glutes or hamstring properly.

In March I was given a model C. I’ve been using it on and off. Two weeks ago, I decided to see how far I could go in 30 minutes. I did 6000 metres, then a week after I did 7125 metres. I was so pleased, I felt great during and afterwards, had the damper on 4 ;o)

Have a way to go with technique. Have been videoing myself.

Will start the Pete beginner plan when my pm5 arrives. My current pm2 works but the buttons are dodgy, so just row is ok.

I was wondering about a heart rate belt, maybe the Garmin hrm dual. I see the Pete plan doesn’t mention heart rate. Shall I just leave the the heart rate side of things for now and just get the 24 weeks done? Or is the hrm a worthy investment?

Thanks Kevin

Your previous athletic experience puts you in very good stead - lots of upside
The PM5 is a good call. Pete doesn't talk about HR caps but you can use a HRM on the slower steady pieces to keep under 80% of HRR (ie aerobic) rather than pace. Garmin and Wahoo TickR with ant+ work well. Lots of talk re heart rate training on these threads.
Early on the HR is less important than RPE and keeping it steady.
lots of good stuff here:

As Lindsay mentions can be a useful bit of data, but it should be treated as only a piece of data, rather than slavishly sticking to it. I use a CooSpo, which is cheap but works very well as you can use the Polar Beat app to track it, but the only thing I'd say is necessary is a chest strap, rather than it being on a wrist.

I usually don't have the HR showing on the monitor for the harder sessions, and just have it running in the background. I can sometimes find it too distracting, but RPE is very often a more useful measure of what level you're working at.

Hello.

It’s been...a while!
Going to start The Pete Plan tomorrow.
The PP was the first plan I followed back in the day and I was actually coached by Professor Pete long before he became a coach. Good times.

I always said I would come back to the erg when my body was shot from other sports.

Tomorrow is the day.

Another PP sprint pyramid @ 1:47. First time that I have ever been able to complete it at current 2k pb pace. Don't know HR average, but it was definitely approaching maximum on the last interval.

Hello all,

I have been lurking on these boards for a while and have learned an enormous amount (on my good days I even try to adhere to the things I learned!).I had been following my own training plan for a while, but the more I read about Pete's Plan the more I realized that it is similar (but much more thoughtful and structured) to what I had already been doing. So, I took the leap this week and began Pete's Plan! I'm looking forward to engaging in this thread!

Some great PBs Cam, but I'd say that your 5k and HM are low hanging fruit compared to your 2k, 60 mins and FM PBs.

Good luck with the PP, I have seen some great improvements from others so it definitely works

Welcome Cam,

Some amazing PBs there, especially the 1k.

The lurking aside, what's your background?

Thank you all for the kind welcome!

My listed #s are all my personal bests, but they aren't all a fair representation of my current capability. My 1k was recent and all out effort. But, most of the other numbers were either "only" around 95% effort (eg. 2k, marathon) or were recorded a little while ago (eg. 500m). I am motivated to know that there are a lot of opportunities for relatively easy improvements at several distances.

About my background: It's varied. I played basketball growing up, but later transitioned to competitive powerlifting. After several years (and about 80kg weight gain) I retired from powerlifting, lost the majority of that gained weight, and - until recently - had been primarily focused on training for ultramarathons. I love ultrarunning, but I'm certainly not built for it and am a notch or two below mediocre!
