New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
@hjs - I appreciate your insight here. I've not done any training specifically for the 5k, but I've done more than a few 5k rows, with my time improving on each one.
As I get more immersed into training in my garage and less at the fitness place where I row (sub expires end of December), I'll incorporate some specific training for 2k and 5k rows.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Might not be much to brag about compared with some of the times here, but just knocked 40s off my 40+ 5k time hitting 20m38sec.
Haven’t done a 2k trial in ages (only just back rowing again), I’ll give one a go Friday and see how close I can get to my 2005 pb of 7m31. Might be tricky as I’m so used to rowing at 20-24 spm I find the shorter distances harder as I struggle with the higher rate needed.

Comparisons are a bad idea, your PB is a stand alone effort and you beat your best ever effort, so well done.paule23 wrote: ↑November 26th, 2018, 5:32 pmMight not be much to brag about compared with some of the times here, but just knocked 40s off my 40+ 5k time hitting 20m38sec.

Congratulations on the PB! It is a few seconds faster than my best time, but I would like to improve. Yes, there are a lot of very fast times posted here, but we are all working on our own performance.paule23 wrote: ↑November 26th, 2018, 5:32 pmMight not be much to brag about compared with some of the times here, but just knocked 40s off my 40+ 5k time hitting 20m38sec.

I find the 500 M and less mentally easy, even if I do not perform all that well. Just go for it and I do not really have enough time to feel the pain or to start doubting. On the other hand, a 2k hurts, and I need to pull out of my comfortable spm to make it happen. Good luck on your upcoming 2k.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
139.6 500m. Beats a PB from 2007. Was kind of a "soft" PB because I didn't focus on shorter distances back then, but I was in much better shape and I'm coming back from about 7-8 years of an obese/sedentary existence. So I'm still very happy with this as I thought all my PBs were long in the past.
BTW, I was gasping for air for about a minute after the row. Does this mean I was anaerobic?

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Yeah! I rowed a new PB of 7:51.6 in a 2k. It also hits the 50% mark in my age-weight group.
It has been a while since I did this distance (because it hurts!) I was aiming for a 1:58 pace, so it was basically spot on. I should probably try a 1:57 pace to see how that goes.
Sitting alone in my garage is not the most stimulating environment for this kind of thing. I am sure you know what I mean.
Using the VO2 max calculator gives me a VO2max of 45.3, which is fairly good for an old guy. I puts me in the "excellent" category for cardiovascular fitness:

I find it funny that a 50% in the rankings translates to excellent in cardio fitness.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Congrats on the PB and hope you keep surpassing it. I've wondered what the rankings mean in terms of general fitness. Given the many highly trained rowers ranking their pieces and that most people who rank them are working on or at least motivated to improve their fitness, it seems about right that ranking in the 50th %ile equates to excellent cv fitness.sdr2017 wrote: ↑November 28th, 2018, 2:13 pmYeah! New PB for HM! 1:36:55 @2:18 24spm. That's three and a half minutes better than my previous try - that's the nice thing about being a beginner - you can knock big chunks off your PBs. Still, I reckon that I can get under 1:35 next time, if I can toughen up my buttocks .

Had to take a break for a drink & to rest my rear portions in the 3rd and 4th 5k sections. Hence the slowing.

If I weighed 75kg that would give me 186W, equivalent to @2:03.5 or 1:26:50 for the HM.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
I have now had my rower one month, and I am quite happy with my effort, I have had 20 rows and a total of 182k so fare.
As previous stated my goal is to get sub 7 for 2k. I still got a long way to go. But yesterday I did some kind of a record attempt on a 10k session. some kind, because the row was started as a “just row” effort. But I felt good during the fist couple of minutes and just decided to see if I could keep going.
Attached is two rows, one from yesterday, and also a similar one from 08.11.2019, and interesting enough the heart rate and stroke rate was quite similar, but the wats has improved.
Anyway I just wanted to share my improvement

Not only that it hints that there is plenty more to come with broadly the same fitness let alone any sort of fitness/technique improvement. Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
No real plan today so I decided to test my fitness with a fast 1k after a 2k warm up. Managed a 1k PB by best part of a second. Effort not quite 100% and pacing was bad but I was just winging it really. The good thing is that this tells me there is a bit more in the tank and also that I should probably try another 2k because I haven't really gone for it since April when I broke 7 minutes for the only time ever. The higher rating here seemed to help and drag factor was 119. 7k SS after to get some metres in.
