I don't believe that any of the suggested thinking has gone through my mind when trying for PBs or WRs.
One should know that a target time is possible from training first of all. Second, don't try for a time when tired. After that, it's all about pace. My eyes stay glued to current and average pace. Simultaneously, monitoring of my entire aerobic system is occurring. Is your pace sustainable even if uncomfortable? Are you having to dig too much? One ought to have a good idea if the target is doable about halfway in. If not, reassess and come back another day. This kind of stuff needs to be done often enough so one does not forget how to assess and do a target time. It is easy to lose that ability. Racing, time-trialing is a skill of sorts. I actually found it "enjoyable" through the years. Unfortunately, I'll probably never time trial again. At 72, the body has finally broken down.

i find one of the adventagous of getting old is that my eyesight is deterioating... not being able to see the pace will be quite rewarding...

"Do I increase rate or push harder? Rate or push harder? Rate or push harder?"
"If I quit it's because I *choose* to quit."
Sigh
