Intervals - when does the clock starts counting down?
Intervals - when does the clock starts counting down?
Hi!
When I do intervals I starts rowing at 00.00 after the break. This means I "loose" a couple of seconds every interval. Is it possible to start rowing with say 2-3 seconds left of the rest and "save" those seconds? What I mean is: Does the clock start at 00.00 or when I start rowing?
Thanks in advance
/Martin

At the zero, so when just mis that zero, the first stroke on the pm is slow. I try to start at 1 second to go.Marben wrote:Hi!

Trainingwise it doesn,t matter, best is to keep one way, so you can compare outcomes.
Races, here its different, the machine starts from the racing software, this always gives a very slow first stroke, 4.xx is normal. Ignore this, just do you thing, everybody has that first slow stroke.
Re: Intervals - when does the clock starts counting down?
I start rowing slowly maybe 20 sec beford a new interval start and them at 0:00 i start the interval.

How do you lose the seconds? Do you mean the time taken to get to pace? If so doesn't matter.
I just sit at backstops and with one second to go, move to the catch and away. As said, whatever you do just do it the same every time.

I assume you mean when you select a workout like 0:30/1:00r for instance where you go full out for 30s and rest for a minute.
I normally row gently during the rest and go fullout when the clock hits 0 then back to slow rowing again at the "r" session

Pretty much every teammate I've ever had will paddle through most of the rest. Around 10s to go they start pulling harder every stroke so by the time the rest ends you are going full speed.

You want to aim to be starting the first full pace stroke from backstops at 4 seconds before the resting interval ends to get the best jump on the clock restarting normal timing.lwtguy wrote:Pretty much every teammate I've ever had will paddle through most of the rest. Yeah, i have seen this mentioned on a vid before about the 4 seconds thing.Citroen wrote:You want to aim to be starting the first full pace stroke from backstops at 4 seconds before the resting interval ends to get the best jump on the clock restarting normal timing.lwtguy wrote:Pretty much every teammate I've ever had will paddle through most of the rest. Re: Intervals - when does the clock starts counting down?
I start every interval from a dead stop - practice that hard start then settling down to target pace after a few strokes.
I always thought the timer starts when you start pulling after the countdown hits 0 ...unless you take too long and it will start by itself

Thanks for the answers.
Yes, trainingwise it doesn´t matter but since I have a 2K race (not a competetion, just my company) in 2 months and when rowing 2k it is just the first 500m that doesn´t have a "flying start" I´m curious what my averagde time would be.
Yesterday I did 500x8 with average 1,41,6/500m, 2 min rest. I´m thinking that without the slow start the average time is more like reality.

Re: Intervals - when does the clock starts counting down?
It used to work that way with PM2, but not with PM3/PM4/PM5 (unless you use untimed intervals).aussieluke wrote:I start every interval from a dead stop - practice that hard start then settling down to target pace after a few strokes.

The newest ergs with the backlit PM 5 monitor have issues where if the flywheel is moving too fast at 0, the piece will start regardless of whether you are rowing or not.

Re: Intervals - when does the clock starts counting down?
I've never noticed any difference since I recently upgraded ergs from a PM4 to PM5Citroen wrote:It used to work that way with PM2, but not with PM3/PM4/PM5 (unless you use untimed intervals).aussieluke wrote:I start every interval from a dead stop - practice that hard start then settling down to target pace after a few strokes.

Maybe I'm just good at starting bang on the 0 then!
