Pete Plan Group - Startup Aug 20th thru 22nd
Re: Pete Plan Group - Startup Aug 20th thru 22nd
Glenn/Mike, thanks for the support, partly just feel bad that I didn't execute my pacing plan and allowed the red mist to descend and cloud my judgement. I did learn a little about my limits and what it's going to feel like in that home stretch of a 2k. Good points about rest, I wasn't really feeling it today and it is my fifth training day in a row which I haven't been doing often enough for that to be normal. Also it is technically a PB for the mile by 8 seconds (although I've only done it once before )

Then you will understand why I was more than likely not going to to one today - at least not toward anything that feels make or break - and then ask for forgiveness I really want to roll into the 4 x 1K this time ready to rock. I will see how it feels in W/U today. Had a pretty long session at the pub last night which is clouding my motivation!

I definitely understand now, I have to stop thinking I'm invincible and can just turn it on when I feel like it. Doing a mile after a pub session is probably not a good idea, better to do some SS and sweat it out.G-dub wrote:Then you will understand why I was more than likely not going to to one today - at least not toward anything that feels make or break - and then ask for forgiveness I really want to roll into the 4 x 1K this time ready to rock. Fine PB Luke congratulations.
John, seems like even with a poor preparation you can still put in a strong 1609m well done.
I tweaked my back a couple of days ago (I was the person in a manual handling video how not to lift...) back on the erg today, but just a SS, have some time tomorrow so will try a mile, but it won't be a 100% effort.
I also want to give the 4 x 1k a good go as my current 1:51.8 average lags behind my pyramid average of 1:46.7 by quiet some distance...

BPP Week 8.4 25' DF113
25:00.0 5,669m 2:12.3 151 819 24
5:00.0 1,114m 2:14.6 143 791 25
10:00.0 1,127m 2:13.1 148 809 25
15:00.0 1,135m 2:12.1 152 822 25

25:00.0 1,149m 2:10.5 157 840 23
Looking back at my log and reading the BPP, I still couldn't establish a target. Just went out at 2:14 and felt my way through it. Still seconding guessing myself with the daemon HD hovering behind my head. Etching this one in memory 5k = 2:12ish @ 80-85%. Beginning to realize my greatest asset for me personally is doing this as a rower-philosopher, watching a lot of my peers looking old, for me...better to burn out than to fade away
@luke - congrats!

Re: Pete Plan Group - Startup Aug 20th thru 22nd
Thanks everyone! Did a barbell press and chin-up workout at lunchtime and felt really tired and could have easily not done this one tonight but will likely not have time to train tomorrow so just did it. Struggled at first - felt like the drag factor was suddenly really high or something (it wasn't - 130 as usual). Once I got past 3000m I knew I'd be ok and manage to rate up and hit 1:52 for the last 1000m.
On a better day I might have gone under 19 - hopefully next time.

Re: Pete Plan Group - Startup Aug 20th thru 22nd
Paul, my "experiment" was a trap baited and set for M. Turboskiff with a real life example of his ideal of a properly executed, properly incremented set of negatively paced intervals. He was not foolish enuf to spring It by attempting to defend the sustainability of that execution over several PP cycles. IIRC, his wingman and interpretor, Mr. Gooseflight, may have done. Your argument that intermediate length (1500-3k) interval distances have considerable bearing on the repeatable 1" bump is irrefutable.
I doubt if any of us are infallible judges of the "investment" made by others in any particular daily result. If a man tells me he was "delaying burnout, holding back, rockin' it, stylin', well within his capabilities at the moment," I have learned to let that stand unchallenged. If he says "difficult, barely held on to finish, at death's door, couldn't see the monitor," I have learned to let that stand unchallenged.
The mildest suggestion for changing course or making improvements can arouse very stong emotions. Best If all of us count ten before responding. The suggestion that one is slacking or walking the dog from the evidence of a single workout should be slept on and by visiting experts for several nites or until the urge passes. As to Pete's way or the highway, Paul, everyone here is attempting to follow one of the Pete plans. We don't want the suitcase that gets packed to be Pete's. We are all capable of getting the wind up to resist invidious and hurtful comparisons when we are the subject. We all of us have to focus on not aiming those weapons at our training partners.

@ John Adcock: Certainly all in on the mile, John! Overreach does influence grasp--and not infrequently for the best. Pain is preparation for more pain. Yes, this is a sell job on Pete's comment visavis the limits of scientific training as repeated by Paul45.

Thanks John.JohnAd wrote:Barry, great intervals. Off 2' mins rest and after some illness too, you'll be catching up with your son pretty soon at this rate .
Although I've still got about an inch height advantage and a 55 pound weight (dis)advantage over my son I won't ever match his power and fitness . He's got some lofty goals and it's fun watching him chase them.
I think because of my size I can pull decent times on the shorter pieces but, though it's improving, my fitness is still the big limiting factor on longer intervals. I've started taking my recovery days prior to the hard interval sessions and it's made a big difference in what I can do.
I get a great deal of motivation looking through everyone's daily work on here. Nicely done Luke. You too John, Rust Never Sleeps.

SS day today. Got to the gym a few minutes late so just did 50', not 55' like usual. 11170m / 2:14.2
Pretty boring stuff but more SS in the bank.
Nice work Tim! Keeping it going well.

Don't understand that reference but I think I understand what 'skiff was trying to say. I may be wrong.jackarabit wrote:IIRC, his wingman and interpretor, Mr. Gooseflight, may have done.
Anyway, what I [hope I] demonstrated was the quite the opposite to what you assert, i.e., as average pace increases a negative split of 1" across intervals is unsustainable because the watt difference increases.
Simply stated, 2:08 to 2:07 is a difference of 4 watts; 1:45 to 1:44 is a difference of 9 watts. And so on.
With experience and a little maths, therefore, the ideal may be to seek consistent improvement in watts per interval not seconds (or fractions of) per interval

Re: Pete Plan Group - Startup Aug 20th thru 22nd
Glenn, your PB is a pace of around 1:54.4 if my math is right. You were on track for a PB and just went too hard on the 4th 1000, that's it. Your HR was at max it looks like too (not surprising). If you had kept the 1:54 pace just 1000m longer, I think you would have had a new PB.
As Greg once told me, not all fails are fails. Sometimes you push the envelope and it bites you. You just REALLY pushed the envelope on that fourth 1000.
Nice Jack! 400m more no problem for you at that pace!
