Your "long slow distance" paces correspond almost exactly w/ the recommendations in the C2UK Interactive Plan for UT1 paces. (Recommended stroke rate is 22-24 spm.)
I tend to think of LSD as longer and slower (45 min+ and 50-60% of 2k watts/pace), or UT2 pacing.
But if one is going to do 5-6 workouts a week, the thinking seems to be that UT1 should constitute the bulk of the training. It seems that your experience generally comfirms that point of view and C2's recommended pacing (which many people find too demanding).
Good luck getting down to 6.40. A 12-second improvement would be a major achievement.
