2k Help

Post by Adrenaline » April 1st, 2006, 1:17 pm

I know this is a repetitive topic, but I'm a novice and have some questions.
Age 15, male
5'4
120lbs
My best 2k was 7:46 in February. My team has had hard practices 6 days a week since then, including about 18 practices over spring break. I have held 1:45, 1:45, and 1:48 for a 3x500 and 1:50 and 1:52 for 2x1000 after intense practices.

We have a 2k test in a few weeks, and I think that low 7:30s is a reasonable goal because i've been working my butt off these past few months. Is this unreasonable?

i think it is a possibility. i would say give it your best effort and see what comes of it. for your weight you are already pulling an amazing 2k.

i went to the C2 weight adjuster and put in your weigh/erg score and the adjusted time accordint to C2 was a 6:29.2

good luck with the 2k erg test. I also have one in like a week and a half.

Have you done any 6ks this winter? How about long aerobic work? I find that the best indication of a 2k time is my 6k - 7 splits.

hey man i'm in the same boat as you, but i do row for a club erg tests bfore national champs i did a 7.25, nt bad considering i was doing a 7.55 earlier that year when i was still a novice rower, think with 2 K is about a 40% anaerobic and 60% aerobic thing so lots of 'homie' exersices are good(homies are a set of exersices used by many clubs around NZ 60runs on spot, 20 squat jump is your chorus then in between you do 30pressups, 30 burpees, 30 wall touches, 1.30min ab hold, 30 situps, 30 vees and what every you want to chuck in between the chorus of 60 runs on spot and 20 squat jumps)

I'm always quite confused when people say that the best way to train for a 2k is to do lots of 6ks. Sure, it helps, but the best way to train for a whatever k is to a lot of whatever ks, so that you get a good, firm psychological grasp for what it's gonna take for you to improve your time on that distance. So, do lots of 2ks.

sharp_rower,

Since a 2k is mostly aerobic, it is important to build your aerobic base by doing longer pieces at a steady state. This is one of the reasons people say to "train your 6k for your 2k."

Also, since a 2k is such a tough mental distance, especially in a race, one way to circumvent this barrier is to work on your longer distances, then a 2k doesn't seem so bad.

I know I got stuck on them for a little while...you would think that doing 2ks over and over would get you used to it and you could cut time off, but an easier way is to do longer pieces and then when it comes to a 2k it doesnt seem as long and your muscles are more equiped for the pain.
