For some reason I started reading this post.
I'm wondering why people keep saying "erg session"? I have the erg app on my phone, which I'm aware can connect to the pm5 to automatically log your activity, but could someone tell me why the term "erg session" is being used, has that just become the way to refer to a rowing session, or is it something else that I'm not aware of?
Welcome to erging madness. The C2 is also referred to as an ergometer, so that an erg session is nothin more complex than a workout on the C2-rowing-ergometer. No phone needed :P

Good luck with your races Mike!

Not sure the time gap between the two, nor am I sure about age. But he is an example of bringing other sports to erging. I suppose I have to submit myself as another prime example of that. Just before turning 66 I did 6:57 at the Ga Tech Erg Sprints in 2012 mostly because my wife volunteered me; I had under 6 weeks of practice. 8 weeks later, at age 66 I did 6:40.7, my PB and at the time under the current WR. No doubt that my cycling aided greatly. But I've never trained like a rower since - very low weekly meters - and is probably the reason that I've never improved on my best, set 14 weeks after beginning. So, I improved about 16 sec from my first 2K to my best - the same as Henry, although offset by at least 30 yrs in age.
You guys are one of a kind even if you are two :o . I will probably never get that far and it has taken me a year to get where I am at now

Also, maybe it's just me, but I sometimes experience that awful "shock to the system" feeling when I attempt a 100% effort after more than a couple of days rest.
I wasn´t able to verify that enough yet but might have the same feeling....

I was proberly not fully clear.

I have two erging "carreers", proberly even 3.

First time in my 20 ies, 6.38 to 6.14.7 pb. Stopped due to a ongoing backproblem. Got operated etc. Long break

Late 30. 95% effort 6.55. Pulled 6.24 three months later. Next year 6.22 stopped again for a year back/hiptrouble.

Begin 40 started again. And pulled sub 6.30 every year. Between 6.29/6.22

In my 20 ies on trained very low volume. Would have been faster If I trained like I do now.

For the rest it shows to me that erging is very age friendly.

Henry, did you ever try OTW? Shame about your early back issues - imagine what you might have achieved on the erg!

Tonight: 8x500 @ 1:47.0. Deffo left some time on the table (1:42 last rep) but felt pretty good overall. The 2k-3 target is very intimidating - will get there eventually I suppose.

I think I use the term erg instead of rowing out of respect for the sport that's in a real boat and on water. Or its maybe to acknowledge that we are doing something that is different than OTW rowing.

I see! I suppose it'll take a while to get used to the language used by more experienced users. I would have understood 'C2 session', but "erg session" I found a bit confusing. Anyway, I'm sure I'll get the swing of it after a bit more reading.

No Bob.

Back is indeed never been fun, played a big role in my life. But no point talking about what if. We should take it like it comes.

Geez, what is 6:22--chopped liver? OTOH, soccer would pay for lunch, the wife, the bairns, the physical therapy.

Alsan, it does take some time to get used to the abbreviations. You'll catch on. If you don't know one specifically, just ask.

So, I just did the speed pyramid and beat my last PB, but I am wondering 1 thing..
ImageImage

Last september when I did this with an overall split of 1:52.1, I was hitting heart rates of 180 on a few of the intervals, with similar splits as today, but today I felt more pain hitting HRs in the 170s than I did hitting 180 last year. Is this due to me not being fully recovered from other workouts? Last year I was generally 100% recovered when doing HIIT rowing sessions, this year I'm like 80 - 90% recovered since I'm doing a LOT more volume than last year (last year I was doing ~ 3 lifting sessions / week + 80 - 90 km rowing / month, this year I'm doing 4 - 5 lifting sessions / week + 150 km rowing / month)

Looking point for point, the only thing I can think of is the wife.

Have a funny story talking about woman. Far back in the day, I lived at home we had an aunt living with us for a while, husband trouble, and my mother was on holliday, so my aunt cooked. I did track and field in thse days and often trained early in the evening. And ate later.
I told my aunt that, she found it pretty stupid, and replied, then you don,t train this evening and eat with us instead. I seldom have seem my father laugh so hard, he almost fell out of his chair. We both are very willing to compromise our hobby's.
