Hello,
I may be in a position to donate a kidney this year and wondered if anyone knew whether this would have any effect on my ability to train as well as if there would be a diminishing of performance once fully recovered from the operation.

talk to the doctors of course - they will have had a lot of experience with donors but in general I understand that you can lead a normal life in all respects.

Good for you for helping someone out! As far as training goes, one healthy kidney can easily do the work of two. I'm hoping that your back and core return to optimal condition. You might want to ask your surgeon about that.

Indeed, I have been told this by the transplant coordinator but I was perhaps looking to hear from an active rower who has donated a kidney to find out first-hand what sort of issues they might have had when getting back into rowing.rondolce wrote:Good for you for helping someone out! Great donating!
There won't be a significant long term effect on your rowing.
In the short term you'll be limited by pain/muscles torn by surgery etc. It's like an injury, it will need to heal, be stretched and strengthened, and then re-trained.
