Two 6-day training camps at the Iron Oarsman, this summer

Post by xeno » March 26th, 2006, 11:48 pm

Hello All,

I am planning two six-day training camps this summer. It will be open to all ages, who look to be HIGHLY competitive on the Concept2 rowing machines. The training requirement will be four hours per day and bring a heart rate monitor.

The dates are: July 3-8, and August 1-6, 2006

Indoor rowing technique will be drilled, filmed and analyzed.

The rowers will learn how to administer lactate tests and use the results to tailor their own future training program. Microsoft Excel program will be used to graph the results.

We will train in the weight room and carefully coach lifting technique which is necessary for better rowing performance and injury prevention. This too, will be filmed and analyzed.

We will work on stretching which enhances better rowing technique and injury prevention.

We will use cross training workouts to spice up and complete the conditioning week.

In order to keep the coaching top notch, each week will have a limit of ten participants.

I have not advertised these camps on row2k.com yet. I am presenting this to you first.

If you want to be part of the camp, email me your intention and send me a check to Iron Oarsman, Summer Camp, 440 East 17th Street #5, Costa Mesa, CA 92627. Lodging is not included, if you would like I can provide accomodation information.

The cost is $995.

All the very best and sincerely,

Xeno, the training camps seem like they'd be great although I'm hoping to be in Ameterdam that week in August. July is the week after Mercer lake trials meaning I'd probably be exausted.

Anyways that's not what I'm posting about. I'm just wondering if the phrase, "the way you row on the paddle is the way you row when you're tired" is your philosophy? One of my (too) many coaches, Peter Wilhelm (I row at NBC) says you were a strong believer in that.

I'm sure it is 100% true (as much as I wish it wasn't at times), just wondering if you were the one to coin the phrase.

thanks

Hello GOROW9

Post by xeno » March 30th, 2006, 12:32 am

Please say hello to Peter and Peter Gross if he is still rowing. Dan Gorriaran was my best man at our wedding. I have fond memories of Providence. I grew a lot in RI, unbelievable. My true breakthrough in single sculling occured in the winter of 1993-to-1994. I was Erging in the *** DELETE - SPAM *** of the boathouse. I remember the inside usually being colder then the outside temperature. I can't wait to one day drive by with my wife and children. Does the chin-up bar still hang in the boat bay? Just writing down these few memories, create some sort of a storm in my head of experiences that I lived during my four years on the East Coast.
Just jump in a plane after the trials and enjoy some training in California.

Hi eyespliced

I am sure you can find a bunch of other camps that are cheaper. Check it out on ROW2K.com

I know what I teach. You come to my camp and you won't need to come back for a while.

I hope you find your way.

You are the perfect candidate by the way.
You have one year left in high school right?
You have the height.
With the right training, I am confident that we can peel off twenty seconds within 12 months of accurate consistent training.
Get the summer job and get the rowing job DONE!

Xeno, I planned to row this summer, however the first week of august is a big competition in Canada. In which i'm going to be peaking for. I'm not sure what kind of boat arrangement i'm going to be in, if I have a crew i probably won't be able to come because of our training... can't let them down.

However if it's a pair(or if im in a single! ) I think i can make it work!

Unfortunatly i can't commit until I know more details. So I will contact you later in the spring.

Jeez, I was thinking about coming but since I am way off the "perfect" profile I best reconsider. I've been to camps where if you weren't the one the coaches wanted you just got minimal instruction. Say that isn't so at Iron oarsman!!!

Hi Dennis

Post by xeno » March 30th, 2006, 3:36 pm

Hello Dennis

The camp, which I run, has everybody on land. A group of ten with four hours per day is perfect so no one feels left behind.

The camp is for ANYBODY OF ANY AGE, who wants to row efficiently and become faster over different indoor rowing distances.

I hope this clarifies it.

Sincerely,
XENO

PS: I am sorry you did not get your fair share of coaching somewhere else.

I've never seen a chin-up bar. Too bad I hate trying to do chin-ups with a door frame, it just doesn't work.

I don't know if Peter Gross is still rowing, however I row with his daughter and his wife coaches so I'll tell them you said hi.

As for the training camp... with plane fare and lodging, well... it makes Craftsburry look cheap. Not that it wouldn't be worth it because I am sure it is but I'm not so sure abou the summer job working out because I'll be gone a lot over the summer. It will be a goal to go to the Iron oarsman sometime during the next few years though, I have to admit I'm jealous of the people hwo live nearbye.

Thanks

No worries Sara.

I am planning to get some group rate at a local Ramada and Holiday Inn.

Sharing a room with somone you know is another variable.

The information that you get at the camp will set the ground work for MANY miles to come.

My goal is to make rowers independent thinkers and show them how the physiology behind becoming an aerobic-sprint-powerhouse works.

Can you take a few digital fotos of the boathouse and some of the people I shared the water with.

All the best,

I'll take some pictures next week. No, there is no chin-up bar any more. I asked about it and they took it down to hang the quad. It's stashed in a corner now.

stashed in a corner?
I want it!

My wife and I were invited to a wedding tonight in Newport Beach. The godparents of the groom live in Bristol RI right off the bike path.

I spent hours training on that bike path with a vengance. On bike, roller blade, and roller skis.

Can't wait for your fotos.

Trying to relive the old days XENO? I can relate to that.

By the way - anyone looking to improve their rowing OR erg scores will benefit from Xeno's coaching. I was in Anaheim on business 2 weeks ago and met up with Xeno at his rowing studio and got some Early morning training in. I've put in over 2 Million meters on the erg since September, did my first erg race in 15 years this spring (6:32) and STILL had some sore muscles I didn't know I had the day after. Xeno gave me some pointers on my rowing stroke on the erg that have improved my workouts already.

Thanks Xeno - hope I can make it down there again sometime.

Cheers,
Troy Tinnes
