Converting an OTW split time to a training schedule?

So we know what split times we need to win a race OTW....

Having used the interactive online training schedule to peak for a 2k race over 16 weeks, how could that be converted to a water based training programme for a crew when you know your water based splits....

Obviously these are slower than ergo splits but we want to be able to create a programme based on the variety that the interactive tool gives you according to your pre-set 2k time and weight etc

alternatively, anyone got an OTW programme for 3 sessions per week over 16-20 week period to peak for a 2k distance....

any help appreciated....

Not that you can't get good advice on this forum, but the rowingillustrated forum might be better to answer this. Look under training/physiology and you should receive some good input.

Trouble is, in order to ask a question at Rowing Illustrated, you've got to become a member. I believe new members are always rejected.

On the erg, the info available is Watts. On water, rating. So use that, shifting the IA accent towards more technical work - long, fast and plenty but below LTHR to lift it and get the crew together.

Alternatively, ask Xeno or use the Wolverine. Not sure I'd want to race 2ks on 3 sessions a week only.

NB 8+ will be faster than the erg, 4- and 4x same, others slower, so you may need to adjust power for the different action times.

Thanks for the replies....unfortunately we don't seem to be able to get access to rowing illustrated.....and I'm afraid the last reply was way over my head!!

Just to be clear....we're a fixed seat gig crew....3 sessions on water is backed up by weights and ergo sessions out of the water....and we all have jobs!!

I was hoping it would be quite simple...we know are 2k ergo splits.....but want to convert that to an OTW split...so we're training at the same intensity....

Rating is still the key, maybe even more so in a gig. See what max rating you can do in it, flat out, without falling apart, for just 15-20 strokes say; then use 70% of this rating for racing. This will be very tough in a barge for 2k. Train at percentages of race rating. Most long work can and needs to be done at half your flat-out rating, i.e. 70% of race rate.

To compare erg-splits with gig-splits, try a 500m on both. Sooner or later you'll have to do some 500s afloat anyway. You'll have a course with markers I hope, or can mark it out using a bike with a meter on the beach or towpath.

I've no idea how fast a gig goes.
You may have to downrate the above numbers considerably, if 2k takes 10 minutes or more.
There are gig racing associations around I believe. This http://www.cpga.co.uk/ is in England. Could be they can give you some better numbers than I can.
