How long until I get back to my PB?

Post by Ted209 » July 15th, 2013, 12:45 am

Hey all, at the end of the last rowing season I pulled a 7:03.8 PB on the erg at 62Kg/137lbs and 16 years old.
I'm now about 66Kg, 17 years old and I have been playing field hockey over the winter. The practices for hockey (3x a week) aren't very physically demanding and we only play games once a week (and I normally don't play the full 70 minutes either). As a result I have gotten quite unfit since the end of the rowing season and I am hoping to get back into shape before the start of the rowing season.
I don't know my exact 2k time but imagine it to be about 7:30-40 or maybe sub 7:30 if I'm lucky. Ideally I want to be sub 7:10 when the season starts.
It's been about 3-4 months since the end of the last season and I have about the same time until the start of the next season.
I have hockey practice 3-4 times a week and a game once a week so I should be able to manage erging 3-4 times a week.

Is getting down to 7:10 in that time a realistic goal? If so will it be easy, hard or somewhere in the middle, and what type of workouts should I do to get fit again, considering I will still need some energy for hockey.

Thanks.

EDIT: Also, would weight training be advisable? I can currently only squat 80Kg for 6 sets of 12 reps, but I haven't actually tried anything heavier than that.

i don't think its likely you've dropped as far as you think you did. Last year i reached my PB in just 2 weeks of rigorous erging after the entire summer season off. 30+ seconds would be a huge drop so i think its more likely you're ~7:20 so 7:10 should be reasonable. i'd focus on long steady state rows mostly to build up an aerobic base before the season. speed work would be less useful since you don't really need to peak for another 7 months or so?

Just get to work, if you general fitness is still good, you will be lose to your best soon. At your age everything is in your favour. Don,t think to much, eat well, train well, rest enough and the results will come.
