Effect of Erging with Slides on Static Erg scores
Effect of Erging with Slides on Static Erg scores
Hey,
I am a high school rower, and I will soon (hopefully) be acquiring my own Concept2 erg. At my school we do a lot of testing/training on static ergs, so results such as my 2k time are extremely important. I have only rowed on slides for a few minutes, for fun, but I could feel how it is much more like rowing on the water, and I could really put my legs into it. I would assume that rowing with slides would help me on the water, but what effect would it have on my static erg times? Would training on slides prepare me for static 2k tests in the same way normal, static training would? Would I have an advantage or a disadvantage?
Thanks in advance,
Ruderer

This paper may be relevant.

2nd paper on page
"Comparison of Rowing on a Concept2 Stationary and Dynamic Ergometer"
Dont be put off by the title, apparently they used slides and not a dynamic erg.
Statistical comparison of various rowers on C2 static and c2 dynamic
Personally - I find it easier to get a higher spm on slides and I believe that for me I can go faster on slides - there is considerable debate this topic on both British and UK forums which you can find by searching the forums.

Thanks for your reply,
If you trained on a dynamic/slide erg, would you feel well prepared for testing on static ergs?
This is essentially what I am trying to find out...I'm looking at the UK forums...but I can't find a "Search" button

Re: Effect of Erging with Slides on Static Erg scores
It is way up in the upper right hand corner and sort of faint. I have a hunch that you won't find an answer to that. Certainly the use of slides is far better for preparing you for OTW rowing and I hope that your coach is not so hooked on static erg scores as to ignore that. A lot of rowers with great erg scores are not good at all in a boat.Ruderer wrote:Thanks for your reply,

Well, thanks for the replies. I guess I will find out the answer to my question through actual training.
Have a nice weekend,

To answer your question above - personally I have no problem switching from slides to a static erg - however I am not an on the water rower - the important thing for you is "what is the best way to train for being in a boat"Ruderer wrote:Thanks for your reply,

There is a school of thought that says that you are more likely to hurt yourself on a static erg than a dynamic erg. For more on this theme google for papers by an Australian physiotherapist called Martin Hooper - search this forum for that name.
Look for posts by Rockin Roland - an extremely good rower and erger who posts on this forum - Roland has a definite opinion regarding static vs dynamic ergs and which one is best.

Me? yes. You? I don't know.Ruderer wrote:If you trained on a dynamic/slide erg, would you feel well prepared for testing on static ergs?
Train on the dynamic and every now and then do a standard workout on the static just to get a comparison and have confidence you can do it.
Re: Effect of Erging with Slides on Static Erg scores
After spending some time on the UK forums I stumbled upon a thread that perfectly answered my question.
If anyone is interested it is right here:

According to this slide rowing should be fine, with a couple of static sessions mixed in.

Re: Effect of Erging with Slides on Static Erg scores
I've had slides for only 2 months and agree with the advice. I only pull it off the slides every 2 or 3 weeks and go static for maybe 5k. I don't row on water. I do enjoy rowing both static and dynamic as different exercises.Ruderer wrote:After spending some time on the UK forums I stumbled upon a thread that perfectly answered my question.

According to this slide rowing should be fine, with a couple of static sessions mixed in.There's no need to give up the slides during the indoor racing season. Your form will translate well to the static erg, and the demands on power and endurance are the same. In my experience, it's enough to devote one or two sessions a week to static training while keeping the remaining four or five dynamic.
I would suggest you consider do most all your long distance training (30+ minutes) on slides. AUS Hooper has done some reports that as rowers tire on long rows form gets sloppy on the static erg and it can result in a sore lower back. If you read the Slide info on the C2 AUS site you'll see the AUS team wants to use them for all testing.
