Sure, I have just started using 108 df.

But it feels great.

And it seems to address some of the major drawbacks of rowing at 12 SPI at 120 df.

The lower drag is easier skeletal-muscularly, and my quick legs and footwork now can compensate very naturally for the loss of drive time by maximizing length and accelerating the chain more quickly.

The lower drag also improves my timing, sequencing, and relaxation at the catch.

The bigger ratio is also great, especially for the FM.

My HR immediately dipped 10 bpm at the same pace and rate when I lowered the drag.

So I just let the rate and pace float up in the opposite direction until my HR was back at 155 bpm.

I am getting _very_ good.

I guess we can conclude now that r.c. has used just about every d.f...... making him some kind of drag queen I suppose...

Rich :Set it anywhere you want and do that lead-up work out of which you claimed:
10x2k/short rests @ 23 spm & UT hr.... at (what was it?) 1:48 pace...

The week are rolling by... still w/o data....
Thanks for all the suspense!

When do you switch back to "unfinished business" mode...? ...once you retire from UM in May?

Looks like we are all going to die of radiation poisoning before I have to worry about it.

:D :D

Life if short.

Then you die.

BTW, I am not retiring until April 2013, although 2012-2013 is a sabbatical year for me.

I'll take a sabbatical semester in the fall of 2012.

So, besides this semester, I have three semesters to teach: Fall 2011, Winter 2012, Winter 2013.

I will teach my last class at the end of April, 2013.

I have been teaching for 35 years.

Sure, that's what most people do.

That's certainly what _I_ did ten years ago, when I took up rowing.

Big mistake.

Low drag is better than high drag.

No contest.

And for good reasons.

It just takes more skill to row well at low drag.

So many don't bother.

It has taken me a _hell_ of a long time to learn how to row well (13 SPI) at low drag (108 df.).

Years and years.

Nonetheless, I guess I should pat myself on the back.

No 60s veteran has ever come within a lightyear of rowing well.

They have missed it by 30 seconds over 2K, by 16 _minutes_ in a FM, by 3/4 of a mile over 60min, by 7 seconds per 500m, etc.

As these numbers are your choice, not mine, I imagine you'll be able to back them up with a display of the df from the monitor to start the video off. I'd be fascinated to see your rowing technique when you're doing it, but really just the monitor would be fine.
Sure.

I'd be happy to.

I'll see what I can put together tomorrow morning.

As I mentioned, I'll probably trade some rate for pace when I race and do 1:34 @ 35 spm, which is 12 SPI.

But sure, I now row naturally at 13 SPI and 119 df.

And the 12 SPI @ 119 df. is still wildly different from anything I did back in 2002-2003, when I raced at 10 SPI and max drag.

The ratio of the former is twice the latter.

Are you going to post a video this morning? I can't wait.

I hope you weren't lying about this...
Where is the video?

Hey, hjs, any possibility of modifying our $1000 bet along the lines of our $3000 bet?
A time extension would be _greatly_ appreciated.
That might be a squarer deal, given my situation (unprepared!).
I need to get sharpened up if I want to be doing 2Ks without a lot of grief.
Training is coming along great--but slowly.
Too slowly, it appears.

If I can't reach my goals in those trials, then I'll pay up for the bet I lost.

My attempt to get better has involved improving my technique.
That work is done.
I now row well (13 SPI).
If I can't reach my goals over the next couple of months, when I will use this improved technique in sprint and distance trials, I can't reach my goals later on.

I won't receive the money until March, though.
Of course, given that I am sending you the $1000 for the part of the bet that I lost last year, if I reach one of my targets this year, you will owe me a full $3000 in return.
As it looks now, I think I will reach _all_ of my targets, not just one, or a few.
Wish me luck!

ranger

The bet was clear Rich.

Last was year was about that 1000$, if you rowed any of your stated goals, I would have lost and you had won the double amount, If you broke a lightweight 6.40 but stayed above your own 2k goal it was a breakeven.
That was the 6.16/6.40 zone
The result was close but also clear 6.41, so I won, you owe me that 1000 $, Chicago has nothing to do with it.............
See: http://www.c2forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=9742&start=0
The other bet was not a bet, but more a promise from my side and it was not about this year, but I gave you the change to row any of your stated goals in your profile, at any point in your life, the ones pointing to a 6.16 2k.
No time restictions.
clear proof of your weight status.
and clear proof of the row.
So the situation is clear, you owe me that 1000 dollar, but after you have settled that bet, you can win that back 3 fold.
Good luck with your row, the WR is possible for you, but it is also still far from your goals. Those are without a doubt unreachable. And not only for you but for every man your size and age.
So if you choose to pay your debt PM me.

April 26, 2010: Sure, I'll owe the $1K bet if I fail to hit my targets when I am fully trained. But not until then. That won't be long now.

Nov 17, 2010: I'll pay the bet when I lose it. I haven't lost the bet.
I am sure that Henry will pay up the $2000 he will owe me when I win. He is a stand-up guy. The bet should certainly be resolved this winter, when I will reach all of my goals.

Feb 14, 2011: Just in the natural course of this training, I should hit all of my distance targets and therefore collect my $2000 from Henry this spring.
ahh Tkx Byron.

Clueless cretin.

Fukushima Dai-Ichi is too far away from Ann Arbor for you to get any measurable effect. You're more likely to get radiation poisoning from the normal background radiation (most likely due to radon gas). Of course Rangerphysics may have different characteristics when it comes to nuclear fission happening and the by-products from that process when the reactor is 14,000Km away.

Stop pontificating on subjects which you are 100% ignorant about.

There's a problem here. ranger is, by his own admission, a supremely talented investor, a player, with a track record for trend spotting that Wall Street would envy. He has property worth in excess of a $1M and will enjoy the most comfortable of retirements, better off than he was while employed thanks to his investment skills. He could turn $100 into a $1000 in a week.

The Cureton household must be comfortable one and $Rich$ must surely be in charge of the budget, which obviously doesn't need much watching since money flows from our hero's fingertips. The negotiation with his wife must surely be an easy one: "Now dearest, my skill with money means that I will keep you in more style than you ever imagined during our retirement so don't you worry about the odd $1000. It's a pinprick; just let me have my fun. And anyway, my erging ability is such that I shall win it back twofold. That's how confident I am so just trust me on this one, eh?"

And if Mrs ranger is so hard to get around, how did ranger negotiate the BIRC trip and the other fruitless trips to rowing venues. How did those negotiations play out? Of course Mrs r is a little in the dark:

"How did it go in Birmingham Richard?"

"Fine, just fine. I won a bronze medal."

"Oh my! You did! Lemme see it. You make me so proud. Lemme see lemme see."

"Ah, oh, yes, medal. Now, where is it? Ah, I remember now, I gave it to Mike Caviston as a thank you for coxing me. What a guy."

I particularly like the part where he uses his wife as an excuse for not paying the bet. So you're telling us that you are worth $1 million+, have been happily married for 35 years, and your marriage will be over if she finds out you lost $1000 bet? Give me a break, not buying it. If this is true you should quit posting on a message board and start trolling dating sites for a new mate.

My goodness, why do you feel obligated to come up with new and innovative lies every day? And for those that didn't notice, he just extended his "training" period by about 3 years. This new drag factor of 108 will take a few years to perfect before he attempts his historic marathon trial.

Putting your financial distresses aside for a moment...
How's the training coming?

In my shameless bragging mode:

Remember last month? Feb 24 and thereabouts?
We were both going to to do 10x 2k/1:00 r... I did it , you didn't.
I decided to give it another go today:

1:17:02.5 - 20000 - 1:55.5 - 23 spm
I dropped from February's 1:57.9 avg pace to 1:55.5 today.... at the same spms.

Are you still so behind me in you training that you cannot get one done? :P
You do realize that I've been back at the erg for less than two months.... and you characterize your training as "complete"?

When do your distance trials begin? I've forgotten...
