@sander: nice work and a strong PB. I can understand not having the energy to sprint the end, same thing happened to me. I've been telling myself that it was brilliant planning to have precisely calculated the minimum steady state split for optimal performance, but I know it's just because the tanks were empty.

21097m

Started out as a long slow piece and after hitting the halfway point way ahead of pb pace I decided to go hard the rest of the way. Finished at max HR and a PB by about 4 min (1:27:48.5).

FIrst time ever doing a 5k for time but I am counting it as a PB because hit a high percentile mark in the rankings for that distance. My best was an 84% in one distance (maybe 10k?). Generally I am usually about 75% in the US rankings.

Not any more ! I hit 2.7 sec away from the 90th percentile for a 5k.

@jlawson: great work on the pb. You are making great strides. With the energy you're putting into this, you'll be cleaning up in competitions soon. Don't you just love climbing the rankings? It is a huge motivator for me. You should check nonathlon.com. Its a website that handicaps everyone regardless of age,sex or weight class across all ranked distances. It really got me to try my hand at the different distances.

On a personal note: I totally crushed my old 30' pb today.

Old PB: 7849m (1:54.6 split) - May 22, 2010
New PB: 8146m (1:50.5 split)

Admittedly, it was an old and stale pb, but I was psyched about the new one. I also discovered that my max HR is actually at least 179. I used think it was 177, but I blasted through that with a minute to go.

Did I mention that I jumped to 7597 meters on the 30 minutes? Chuffed to bits I am!

Seems as if everyone is setting 30 minute PB's!!!! I set mine this morning:

Old PB: 7,560m - Jan 11th, 2011
Today: 7,729m

This piece felt great, I held negative splits the whole way. First 10 minutes was right around 1:58 / 500m, second ten minutes 1:56, and final ten minutes 1:53-54 range as I sprinted the final two minutes at 1:46 or so. Very pleased, really need to focus on long and slow distance now to build a stronger base.

I did just 12 erg workouts las† month (3/week) and every one of them was a 30' piece. However, I did not exactly think of it as ruling - more like I was just in a rut (but not rutting).

The PB's continue to fall with regularity, but the gains are getting harder and harder to come by. I also seem to be having more luck with PBs at the longer distances than the short ones. My latest attempts at 500, 1000, and 2000 failed to produce the desired results, but 5, 6, 10k, and 30 min have. I don't know if that is because it is hard to set new records at short distances when you are at the end of a very hard block of sessions and are sore, or if all the long distance is paying off in fitness.

Anyway, 30 min today yielded 7819m which was a record for distance and for highest percentile of any distance/time (88.8%).

My goal is to hit the 90th percentile in most categories by summer.

Oh yeah, I also set a new PB for HR :-) 170 instead of 168 like I thought it was.

Have you checked out the nonathlon? (nonathlon.com) If you do a lot of the different categories you might find it a good motivator. After May 1st would be the time to start it, since it goes by the regular C2 erg season.

Had a 2k test today. Went alright, cause I PRed, but I never got into a rhythm. Started out pretty well, but kind of lost it during the third 500m. Then during the sprint I just didn't bring it down as much as I'd hoped. Oh well, still a PR, but I know I'm faster. Here are the splits from memory:

2000m 6:47.9
500m 1:41.4
1000m 1:42.5
1500m 1:43.0
2000m 1:41.0

Hadn't been on an erg in a couple days, so that probably didn't help. Didn't work out Friday, did a treadmill VO2max Saturday, and then took Sunday off. All things considered I'm content with the piece, but expecting to drop a lot of time after spring break.

Andy,

Although I know how you feel, rowing a PB 2K is a pretty nifty accomplishment, and it looks like a well controlled row. Even in the 3rd 500, you only slowed by a fraction of a second and you pulled a pretty good sprint at the end.

I bet you'll improve again, as soon as you can face doing another 2K. I hate them so much, I want to do them as rarely as possible.
