Trouble with thirst

Post by mccoys » January 19th, 2009, 3:49 pm

Does anyone have trouble with being thirsty? I am having trouble getting through my 5000 to 7000m workouts because I have to stop to take in water and this slows my time down. My 7000m average split is 2:39.9 with a stroke rate of about 22spm. I am 59, female and overweight. I can manage to go 3000m without taking a drink but to complete a whole 7000m is way too long without water.

Just to clarify, I have been doing the "Pete's Plan" and have had training on my technique so I think I am approaching it all right, it's just I am so thirsty.

Take a break

I get dry mouth, too, on longer rows. You can drink a lot before rowing, but if you are in a low humidity environment, and/or are a mouth breather (rather than through the nose) then your mouth will get dry. But if your goal is really weight loss, not winning races, then a quick break halfway through for a drink is no big deal. Maybe put a few dixie cups of water on a stepstool next to the rower that can be easily grabbed and downed would do it?

I normally get dry mouth if I don't drink for 10 or so minutes, but when I chew gum I can usually keep it at bay for an hour or so.

Hi All,

I have encountered that problem during the 21 K.
In mountaineering you can buy a backpack with a watering tube to your mouth.

Maybe that 'll help! I have no experience in rowing with a backpack btw.
I think you will be less thirsty if you lose some weight.

You should be able to row 5 k without stopping for a drink. If not I see no other solution than stopping for a drink. Bikers - Tour de France - also drink a lot while cycling, but they do not need their hands like rowers do.

A lot of thirst is weight related as is diabetes type II.

Drink more at forehand, for a 30 min row there is absolute no need to drink if you are well hydrated.

Thanks for the info. Actually I am overweight and diabetic so the thirst problem is a fact related both to the weight and diabetes. I always drink a lot and make sure I drink lots before I start.

I tried to do less mouth breathing today and tried the gum. Other than the sweet taste in my mouth I managed better than I have previously. I still stopped for a quick drink but not as often or as much water. So it looks like advice has helped.

If I lose any weight at all (which I have not since October, but that is normal for me to have trouble loosing weight no matter what I eat) that might help. I trust that as I keep at this the pounds will eventually come off and I won't be as thirsty.

Thanks for all the comments.

What are you drinking? make sure it is not soda of any kind before a workout. That will just make you more thirsty. Drink plenty of water and mix with something like cytomax. I don't know if Diabetics can drink Cytomax, so you'll have to research that. But whatever you do don't drink soda before a workout and preferably never.

Pour a little lemon juice in water (or bite into a lemon) and drink before erging. It helps a lot with the "dry-mouth" feeling. Anything with sugar (incl sports drinks) will make you feel more thirsty.
