Workout from Hell?
Hey all,
Today our coach assigned the following workout...I follow the Pete Plan and wolverine threads almost religiously, and I was looking for some thoughts on if this workout is even "doable"...
4 x 7:00 (4:00 rest) at 2k pace
(We just did a 2k test last Wednesday so the pace from that test is to be used for this workout)...
My only thought is that if someone PR'd on the last 2k...which some did...how on earth are they going to be able to repeat that 3 more times on 4:00 rest...yes 4:00 is nice, but not nearly enough to recover from an all out attempt at a 2k (which for our guys they would be pulling more than 2k in the 7min span)...
Any thoughts?

If your 2K time is 10 minutes or so then it comes close to being reasonable--if your 2K time is significantly faster then no one could do that.
Or if you 2K time was rate limited to something like 20 spm and this is not rate limited it may be possible.
4x7min r4' can be done at something like 5K pace (although 4' rest is a bit short).
Don't know what your coach was thinking but it does not appear to be possible let alone a reasonable workout .

My daughter rowed her freshman year in college. The workouts they were put through were brutal, every day, sometimes twice. Many of the women were injured or sick all winter as a result. With all the new knowledge in exercise physiology, I was baffled at how hard they were pushed with no real time to rest and let the muscles, and rest of the body, recover and get stronger.
Your workout there sounds like one of those. As suggested, it may be just to see how hard you can go mentally as well as physically, and I suggest the next day should be an easy or complete rest day.

Mark Underwood. Rower first, cyclist too.
Agreed. If you have a 2k faster than 7:00, then by definition, holding your true "2k" pace for 7:00 for even one rep is not possible by any theory. 4 reps would be doable at close to 5k pace...PaulH wrote:I think to some extent that depends on what level you're rowing at. If your 2k pb is 6:30, then doing 4 lots at the same pace as your 2k but for longer is unreasonable - in fact doing just 1 would be a strain.

i've tried to do back to back 2k's at race pace with 15 minutes rest between them and DIED during the second one.
To do four of them on 4 minutes rest - INSANE - I don't honestly see how it could be done if you had an honest pace. By definition you should be going full out and leave NOTHING during a race - no way you can recover from that in 4 minutes.
