rockford files training
Guys, just curious on if you think rowing 5 days a week for 10K in about 50 minutes produces much physical benefits? been doing it for probably 2-3 months. (been watching the rockford files lately on dvd, one episode per session).
Benefits to me would include being stronger aerobically on the bicycle and getting the "ripped" look. (But I can't row enough to keep up with all that I eat, so the rip looked is buried under fat...)
Thanks for your opinions,
KR

Those number don't match. They're at completely opposite ends of the ballpark.KR wrote:10K in about 50 minutes

10K in 50mins is slower than the average 70 year old. You'd need to be closer to 36mins for 10K to be near your old 2K times.

I think that was his question...given that he is rowing them in 50mins would indicate (and would make sense if watching a show) that its not nearly taxing enough. Yeah...50mins of cardio is still better than sitting on your butt watching television, but I would argue if your 2k time is still sub 7 at this point...lowering those 10k times down to AT LEAST a sub 40min should still be moderately easy for you.
I think that would be slightly more beneficial...just my two cents though...I could jog very easily for 50mins every day and see bodily response A...but running a little faster would produce B which would be better to "get ripped" I would assume.
Best of luck.

Of course there is some benefit but really why go that slow? You would get far more benefit if you did it faster with almost no difficulty. Second why would you want to row 50 minutes every day?
If you goal is to watch TV then your doing fine. If you goal is to get some exercise you could get more benefit in much less time.

Fairly sub-aerobically? That must be more like near-comatosically for you.KR wrote:i guess the question boils down to if you use an erg fairly sub-aerobically, is there any significant muscle growth or toning?
I'm a 43yo out-of-shape woman rowing purely for fat burning and maybe a little endurance boost, and I can churn merrily away (OK, merrily might be stretching it) for 90 minutes at that pace, after having rowed 0 meters all season until the HC.
Averaging about 10K/day since Thanksgiving, I have gotten significant muscle growth/toning. But I started out from a whole different place than sub-7 2K.
Good for you
It's good for you like going for a daily walk is good for you. It burns some calories that might otherwise go on the love handles. It is certainly better than not doing it. But it probably isn't going to get you "ripped."
well hell, you guys got me thinking i need to go harder now, and that will lead to doing the damn (and i mean damn) indoor again on jan 31, and i haven't specifically trained for it (speed work) and i am set up for failure depending on who shows up (the only spot that matters in #1) and i will go in and do it and probably grit out a 6:45- 6:50 or so and fail to win the gold, and then when its over i will have a sore throat, cough, and not row again until next september cause i can't stand the thought of it...
or i can rockford steadily for another month or two.

working through season 2 of rockford currently, it's not bad.
Nothing wrong with what you're doing, I can understand not wanting to attempt sub-40's, but I would have thought that 2:09's (50% of power of top end of expected 2ks) should still allow you to watch the TV in relative comfort. I thought getting ripped was merely about getting body fat down. So with the right diet, your plan could work, but will be easier with a faster pace and more cals burnt.
