Erging-running transition

Post by sammac112 » August 30th, 2008, 2:29 pm

If i go on vacation for about a week and am forced to run instead of erg, what can I expect when I get back?

Should I attempt to erg at the same pace I was previous to the brake, or take the pace up a few seconds?

I would run each day, maybe 30 minutes average.

If you will actually run for 30 minutes a day for a week on vacation I don't think you will lose much conditioning if any at all. I would mix it up with some interval work if your goal is to do well in the 2K row.

I had a similar experience except longer away from erging. The week before vacation I was too busy at work to erg at all. Then there were the two weeks on vactation when I did not bicycle as much as I wanted, but did get in an average of 1 hour per day in the kayak. I think that was very good for my core strength, but not much good for aerobic aconditioning. Finally the week after vacation, you guessed it, I was to busy at work to erg.

Four weeks away from erging and I decided to restart an interactive 2K conditioning program from the UK site. My paces are faster than they were before.

After a break, I always spend a few days to get back into things. I usually start with a longish row not too intense. Not too hard at first then more intense, but always within my self. First time when I do intervals I start very conservatively but if I feel good during the workout I'll do harder. After a few days I know how I'm feeling and how much I lost. No sense in going in with preconceived ideas of how much fast you should go.
