Proper technique

Post by Bruce-YVR » August 21st, 2008, 10:25 am

Hi guys... a friend of mind wants to learn how to row properly. I remembered I bookmarked a link to a rower showing the proper forms but I lost the link. Sorry I dont remember the rower's name... but the link was so useful... you can move the cursor to speed up or slow down the pics to see each stroke.

Please send me the link... TIA

I'm unsure whether you are asking about an ERG rower or an On-The-Water rower. Anyway, here's a frame-by-frame on Olaf Tufte's (Olympic single champion) stroke on-the-water.

I would encourage a beginner to differentiate the parts of the stroke much more then Tufte does in that video. Particularly on the recovery but somewhat on the drive too. His knees start to come up just as his hands are over his knees and before his back is vertical. If a beginner imitates that at low power and high stroke rating, she will likely have a lot of trouble at the higher ratings and high power. The parts of the recovery and drive necessarily merge together when rowing at a high rating, but one should not start out imitating that.

I have a hunch that he means the one of Xeno, but I don't have the URL handy.

Edit: I should not have said the one of Xeno, since there are probably dozens of videos of him on the net. There was one, however, that was set up so that you could go through it frame by frame.

Sorry I don't have one for frame by frame, but can't resist pimping my own site here:

Good show, Dougie! That's exactly what I had in mind, but I must admit that I had forgotten that there was an OTW version as well.

Will you be at BIRC this year? I am booked at Jury's Inn starting a couple of days before. But,of course, there is a big question about whether or not I will stay healthy (or even alive) long enough to make it.

Speaking of Xeno, he says in a recent video that he is back in training with the goal of the 2012 Olympics. This should be very exciting!

One useful thing I discovered on this site a while back: you can get a "real time" view of these clips by holding down the arrow key on the keyboard. It doesn't work if you use the mouse and try holding down the mouse button. It helps to compare the frame-by-frame with the real time rowing.
