Homeless: Will Erg for Meters

Post by BJMoose » April 24th, 2009, 11:49 am

It's almost a new C2 season, and I'm looking for a home on a (most likely virtual) team. This would be for myself and my nine year-old son; my wife still can't understand why anyone would possibly subject themselves to this unique torture. I've looked over a lot of the team threads, and got somewhat familiar with the larger teams, but don't know much about the remainder. What I'd be looking for in a perfect world would be the following (in order of importance) . . .

1) Challenging, but not overly competitive. Let's be honest here; I'm old, slow, and am within a few pounds of qualifying as a lightweight female (I'm a male). So while I'd like to improve my times, it's doubtful I'll be winning any races soon. That said, I am persistent, and at least trying to keep up with others is almost sure to get my arse on the erg on those days when it's so tempting to just lounge.

2) Charitable bent. Wouldn't mind a challenge or two each year being tied in to making/obtaining pledges for a commonly decided charity. My personal preference is organizations which help youth with assistance towards future success -- helping them "get over the hump." But, I can be flexible.

3) The possibility left open of meeting team members "in real life," as geography allows.

That's the laundry list; but just hitting #1 above would likely be sufficient.

About me: I'm male, 51 years old, 138 pounds (63kg), in reasonably good shape from weight training, should be good for a minimum of 1MM meters/year, and with my very own D/PM4 that arrived this week.

Apologies for being so long-winded. I realize it makes it seem I'm putting more care into selecting a team than I did in selecting a spouse. Beth, if you are reading this, I assure you that isn't the case!

So, veterans, any suggestions for a team that meets at least some of the above? Irrespective, thanks for reading through all of this!

Ed

PS: Intentionally being cross-posted on the US and UK boards.

The Challenge ... is from within
The opponent ... is yourself
The reward ... is private
The victory ... is having met the challenge

A salute to those who meet the challenge ... and taste the victory

This was posted on another site here and I borrowed it..I find that it says so much about rowing..in a challenge or on a virtual team.

Being on a team brings different feelings and experiences to different people.Mostly it is accountability and the desire to have goals and row with those with similar goals. What you gain should be personal and being on a team just makes it so much more fun.

Good luck in your search for the team that will meet your needs.
