Morning all,
It's been a long time and remis that the Forum Flyers don't have a thread on the US forum. Time for a change we think and time to reconnect with the other site of the pond. You'll all know the trouble with the UK forum which seems to get lost in the ether, hopefully someday it wil get taken back by C2 and will become more visible.
A bit of a reintroduction
We were originally formed in 2001 on the old style US Forum. Of the original Flyers we still have Steve Green, Nigel Farmer and Rick Bayko.
Our membership is an eclectic bunch of young and old, slow and fast and from all corners of the globe. Representation from the United States, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Canada, Finland, Norway and the Netherlands.
We have all abilities from beginners to World CRASH B hammer winners and numerous British Indoor Rowing Championship medallists. We are all non-elitists, we welcome everybody, and all we ask is participation.
One man's pain is another motivation. We are competitive but we’re always supportive. There are no laws and no rules, it’s all about the bums on seats. Have a look at the challenges, drop us a line, get involved and then jump aboard.
We'd particularly like to encourage partiicipation in the C2 Cross team Challenge
http://www.c2ctc.com/
If you dont know, there is a different challenge every month and it's all about filling boats and getting into as higher boat as possible, as well as just how many boats can we fill. Have a look, have a go and sign up. This month is a simple 20 mins
Please contact me at
meerkats1970@yahoo.com or PM me ID Meerkats.
Look forward to hearing from you. If you are currently a Flyer, please please post and let us know whats going on and what you are up to
Cheers
Chris

I have also been here from the beginning. I compete a little, I have given up on the 2k, my asthma and my competitiveness are at odds so the 2k for me is not possible anymore. I still do a 1k when there is a race available. Mostly now, I row to keep my weight down. I started on the C2 in 1998 and I am approaching 25,000,000 meters.

Hi Steve, hope you got the email.
Two main places to get cracking at, firstly the C2CTC,
http://www.c2ctc.com/
get youself registered as as a Forum Flyer and get a sneaky 20min row in, see where you stand and then see how far you want to go. Can be pretty motivating over th emonth trying to sneak up a boat or just sneaking above the person in front of you.
Do you log all your m's on the C2.com website??, if so change your affiliation in your profile and boom!!, all your lovely m's go into the collective pot and we see how far we can get as a team. Leading on from that there are the C2 virtual challenges through out the year.
Cheers
Chris

Chris, I sent an email but then rowed the current 20' test and registered. Two questions: I have pretty good feelings about my current team for the C2 seasonal challenges and might want to switch membership for the WEC, FTC and VTC. Would that create a problem for FF, C2log, for me, or all three perhaps? And, I have no idea how the CTC works beyond the seating arrangement in the boats. (Was Miss Manners consulted?). I tried Indoor Sports for the rule book or a short primer on rationale and tactics with regard to challenge rerows and came up empty. Thanx. Jack G

Hi Jack,
Welcome aboard and thanks for registering and having a go at the CTC. I hope you find the challenges good and varied as well as the friendly competition
You make a good point and yes, you dont have to do everything, several people do different challenges with different teams, we have a saying."its all about bums on seats". If we are rowing, no matter who with and how far, its a win win. You don't have to change your overall affiliation as the challenges are not linked.
The CTC, there is a link to the rules somewhere but basically you need 3 x hwts 1 x 1lwt and 1 x female to float a boat and the average time for that boat is taken, so if you row faster it will do two things, push the average time of the boat down and the boat goes up the leader board or simply pushes you up the leader board. For me personally, if i get time i kind of look 10-20 places ahead and that is my next target.
There are rules for different challenges andthey are set out at the top of the challenge page, it will soon make sense
Have another go leter in the month, learn from the first go and try and improve, cant get better than that
Cheers
Chris

Set out below
1. Duration of a challenge: There was unease at MAD's 12km challenge which fitted the criterion of an hour for warm-up, row & cool-down when elite rowers were considered but not for slower categories. 10km was established as the limit for single distances or 45 minutes for timed intervals.
2. Standing/rolling starts: Until recently, rowers made their own choices about how to attack the starts during interval challenges. After much wrangling it was decided that the team proposing the challenge should stipulate the manner of each start.
3. Interval rests: Again, until recently, it was accepted that rowers could log results when they had taken shorter or no rests during interval pieces. It was agreed that teams could insist on the rests being taken for a valid entry and that this should be included with the challenge. For example, the current FIRT challenge stipulates a maximum of 6 minutes rest. This implies that a rower could take no rests and submit a distance for 15 minutes continuous rowing.
4. Rate-limited pieces: It was accepted that a rower could take more than the maximum number of strokes provided that the monitor rounded it down to the stipulated limit. For instance, a 30spm20 piece requires 600 strokes. A rower may pull, say, 608 and still produce a valid entry.
5. Sliders/Dynamic ergs: There's not been much discussion about their use; it's not even clear whether they provide an advantage over the static erg. Results are valid from both slider and dynamic ergs. Results are not allowed when non-C2 machines are used.
6. Timing of Entries: To allow late entries to be recorded from all parts of the world, the new challenge does not appear on the CTC site before 12:00 UK Local on the first day of each month. We rely on rowers to produce their performances during the calendar month in their time-zone.
7. Multiple Team Participation: Rowers are restricted to making an entry for one team during each monthly CTC.
8. Change of Team: Rowers may change teams but must do so by adding a new login name rather than by editing an existing account. This will avoid any changes to entries logged prior to the change.
9. Weight categories: Lightweights must weigh a maximum of 75.0kg (male) or 61.5kg (female) at the time of any valid row. Ergers who lie close to the weight boundary may maintain heavy and lightweight logins but may only use one of them for each challenge."

This morning I learned all I need to know about rotisserie seat racing in the C2CTC by observing the results for Banana Boat and Fitness Matters. It's like the Lilliputians take on Hans and Franz. Maybe a little lesson there, ya think?
