Red Cross told me to eat ice cream
I’m a regular platelet and whole blood donor, averaging ten platelet donations and three whole blood donations a year. I had my first adverse reaction today while donating platelets. Half way through the 87 minute procedure I developed severe muscle cramps in both legs. The Red Cross nurse gave me two chewable calcium tablets to chew. Within 30 seconds my cramps went away. She told me to bulk up on calcium before and after a platelet donation. She told me to eat ice cream. Took her advice and stopped at the local Super Fresh store and bought two pints of Haagen Dazs English Toffee. Whenever you see good old brianric eating ice cream, just remember I’m following the advice of the American Red Cross. Ohh, the sacrifices I make to donate platelets. Somebody got to do it.
