What is the Nonathlon?
This is a competition based around the Concept2 indoor rower. If you use a Concept2 and are interested in a way of comparing yourself to other rowers please enter the competition.
Concept2 divides people's performances up by the age, weight class and gender of the participants. If you're a 54 year old lightweight woman you can compete against other women like you in the Concept2 ranking, but it's hard to know how you compare against a 35 year old heavyweight man. That's where the Nonathlon comes in! It lets you compare yourself against other rowers, covering a range of distances (not just the popular 2,000m event).

How does the scoring work?
Each time or distance you record is compared against a theoretical 'expected' standard. If you match that standard you get 1,000 points. If you are slower you'll get proportionally less, and if you're faster (not easy!) you'll get more.

For all members who add new times or complete new segments / legs, please post a note and I will update the scores and averages. Thanks for participating in the UNM Nonathlon Score thread.

The scoring is driven on the total from the number of legs or segments completed. The average points column details the individual ranking (out of 1000 theoretical expected target).

David:

Thanks for the update, I'll add you to the list when I get home from Idaho on Thursday evening. I agree that working the different distances is painful (I hate sprints), but, from what I can see... the average numbers by distance or time are generally very consistent. I work on the lowest rated pieces to try to build my average score. Good Luck and Good Rowing!

Nonathlon update

Post by hafner » June 29th, 2006, 8:08 am

OK, just added a 500m (I HATE sprints!): 1:39.8, for a total of 3492 for 4 events (moved up 10 spots to 104). I know I can improve my 5K and 10K times: they're 1min and 1.5min (respectively) off of my PRs. But first, I've got to get these sprints outta da way.

Rowbo Nonathlon Postings

Post by rfahle » July 6th, 2006, 10:00 pm

GreetingsAll:

I was late this afternoon finishing the review of Nonathlon results. Congratulations to new numbers from Bonnie, Henrik, Turbo Turtle, and a big welcome to Dave H and Terry Turtle.

I guess today is my birthday, so.... maybe my results will get better as I'm a year older (just kiddin' - I checked and it doesn't work that way!).

I had hoped that Bonnie would take mercy on me and let up from the brutal whipping she has unleashed on me in Nonathlon and total meters. I guess she figures that I'm still younger (just a little) and I should show more respect for my elders!

Your advanced age has obviously impaired your eyesight (Can you read this NOW?) or perhaps it was senility that (conveniently) caused you to overlook the fact that my Nonathlon score is now 7643 (not 7642!) Watch your step, sonny, or I'll be forced to beat you about the head and shoulders with my cane (if I can remember where I left it)! :? :?

To My Rowbo Mates: The beatings will continue (from Bonnie) until morale improves! Please note that I accept that I made a big mistake (1 point) and I have corrected and confessed my transgressions.

Bonnie's erg tracks across my back are healing nicely after she ran over me, placed her erg in reverse and backed over me again to "See what she hit" and then spun her erg wheel on me as she left me eating her dust.

Bob, I don't want to jinx this, but if you do as well in the other two events(6K and 500m) and pull any kind of Full Marathon you'll have Rocket Roy's spot!!

We're rooting for you!

Nonathlon Leaderboard Changes

Bob L:

Thanks for the post to keep me up-to-date with Nonathlon. Great Job with you timed pieces, now I know why I am always riding back in the pack in CTC Challenges. Your performance speaks for itself (7 or 7 pieces are over 900 points). Thanks for being a great role model for us!

nonathlon scores

Post by boblevy99 » July 10th, 2006, 4:38 am

Tom and Rick -
Thanks for the encouragment. I need to train for the
marathon and might not be able to row one until the end of September. I have always trained for all the other distances and can row the remaining 2 pieces sooner. The nonathlon scoring system is very interesting. I had always been told that training for anything except the 2K was a waste of time. After all, the other distances were for niche rowers. I never cared and trained anyhow. Now the nonathlon encourages that type of training.
