This upset some of my teammates and I think they left boat. Some were wanting row for O D but Jim said row for Lun-Tics this year. I know I am mad.
I am sorry that you, and some other teammates were made or upset by Dave's post.
I won't speak for Dave, but I personally felt that it was a very nice post. Showing nice sportsmanship - wishing your competitor good luck, especially as this is all for fun, even we still want to beat them. I think both teams have a lot of fun and camaraderie on the forum.
Also congratulations on the 2 Mm for the season! Are you aiming for at 4 for the year?

Sincerely,
David
Thanks for the congrats, just rowing , no goal just do the best I can.
We weren't upset about the sportsmanship,(that is cool) just the why the Luna-Tics had so many new teammates.

Well the sun is kind of shining in Sydney today after a wet long holiday weekend. We also turned our clocks forward one hour over the weekend so back to rowing in the dark for another couple of weeks it seems. Mind you, I’m not complaining as we get an ‘extra’ hour of sunshine after work!

It is great to see the Lunatics doing so well in the challenge, and I think this is one of the things that the Concept C2 rowing people have got right. Mind you, I don’t think the absolute numbers truly display the endurance and effort that individuals put in. And I’m reminded by the biblical story of the old lady that offered a couple of coins to the collection, it wasn’t much, but it was all she had, truly a great contribution. These challenges bring to together like minded people into a community where they can row, challenge themselves, and provide an environment where like minded people can share the experience together...

I’m sure most agree that regardless of your personal motivation it’s great to be able share the experience, and the diverse background of the people that weave the fabric of the Lunatics together makes for a colourful and highly motivating place...
Cheers, BBB

Fall Team Challenge: Day 18 of 31

Post by Kona2 » October 4th, 2011, 12:18 am

ImageImage

Whew. Is it still day 18?! Congratulations on getting to 88 percent participation! Not going to gloss over the reality that many on the team feel like it's not been a very happy day. Like I said, we really do want the whole teammate - not just the meters. We are an amazingly diverse group of rowers, and the challenges don't always give us the opportunity to learn much about our teammates. We encourage those who frequent the team pages to share their stories because you never know when your story will help someone else. I welcome any suggestions on how to better introduce new team members, as well as encourage those of you who have invited friends to join the team to help introduce your friends to the team. Otherwise, we see a team profile entry...but know little of the person.

Difficult events can make teams stronger, just like dealing with adversity of any kind can make an individual stronger. Let's move into day 19 and beyond as a stronger team...and make it a great finish as Ross has suggested. We have a short time on this earth, and even less sometimes to make a positive difference in each other's lives. We can choose to do this.

Total Challenge Meters = 15,369,396 m

Amazing milestones and contributions continue! Here's a link to the individual contributors - with a big thanks for rowing with us !

More like a bunny trail episode...

Here I thought we were down to the last dandelion of summer! Geese have been flying low for some time now, lawn doesn't need to be mowed nearly as often, and golf season is coming to an end. Little did I know that I should have also been tracking the monarch butterfly migration!

Image
There I was, out on the golf course today (rowing tomorrow!), and all these monarch butterflies were everywhere! It was very cool. They seemed particularly fond of a purple-flowered bush - with as many as six or eight landing on the flowers. Little nectar grabbers.

Image

I asked one of the people I was playing with what kind of bush it was...and it literally is called a butterfly bush. Another item to add to the list for next year's garden. They say that seeing butterflies is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. I think it's a sign of good karma.

Season meters as of 156/365 = 59,886,725 m (lots of what would have been reported tomorrow in today's numbers)

Total meters on the day = 1,105,298 m

Oars in space = 51 percent

Ahoy-there TimbukToo'ians!

Just dropping by to say G'day - and keep up the good work!
As a "long-term" Lunatic, I still look at you guys as our yard-stick in these challenges. Forget total meters... that is really down to who jumps on board during the challenge (not sure why we have picked up so many this year??)

Well done, and go for it!!
Cheers,
Dave

This upset some of my teammates and I think they left boat. Some were wanting row for O D but Jim said row for Lun-Tics this year. I know I am mad.
Rosita, Michelle and anyone else this has upset... I am sorry that I have offended you, and that you have interpreted my encouragement of TimbukTWO this way. It was not intended to denigrate anyone or their contributions.
I truly don't know why we have 143 team members this challenge compared to the same time last year! I was simply adding some encouragement to a team that is trying hard with numbers more like we used to have (and that we have competed with previously). It never occurred to me that anyone would take this in the context you have, as it was certainly not the spirit it was written with... again, please accept my apologies.

As for how our Challenge Team grows each time, nobody sees it outside of the team manager, but we have an additional 119 challenge team mates who are on our challenge team roster, but who are not participating in the current challenge. With this many "standing by" it is no wonder that on any given challenge it would appear that we have gained a large number of team mates all of the sudden. Lots of our challenge team mates are not on our regular year-round team, but like to compete with us on the challenges, and we welcome that! Many of these challenge team mates have been on our team roster for many years now.

The LUNA-TICS are all about doing what you can, when you can, with what you've got.

Let's go do some rowing!

Dave - Giving encouragement to another team is surely considered good sportsmanship. You need take no ownership in how your original post was interpreted.

Post by Kona2 » October 4th, 2011, 6:12 pm

Whoa! Are we at warp speed ?! I thought that since I was later in getting the numbers captured that there would be maybe 200K additional meters since last night's posting. Hah. Fooled me. There were 819K additional meters as of 10 AM or so, and we flashed past the 60 MM checkpoint in our rowing universe.

Welcome to new teammate Michael J ! We wish you many great rowing sessions as part of this team!

Before the superheroes got their own movies, many began their lives on the pages of comic books. And, in some instances, the superhero was created for radio. Now some of the radio show heroes (the Green Lantern, the Shadow) sort of evolved into movie superheroes. But one superhero type that first existed on radio before he got his own TV series was a guy named Captain Midnight. Captain Midnight (like all good superheroes) fought the forces of evil, and crime and stuff in the time just before the US entered World War II. Captain Midnight was the leader of the Secret Squadron. On some of his missions, one of the signature aspects was that he had to return before the stroke of midnight. I dont think he'd turn into anything if he didn't return at midnight, but it was probably important. This radio show was popular with both kids and adults (let's face it, the adults were more than half the audience). The sponsor of the show was a company that made Ovaltine, a chocolate milk flavoring. All the listeners could save up their box tops or whatever you could save from buying Ovaltine and get different really cool toys. Like Secret Decoder Rings.

Image

With a secret decoder ring, you could figure out the encrypted code, and get a preview of what the next episode was going to be about. I wish we all had one that we could use here once in awhile. :D (You knew where I was going with this, but it's a good story anyway.)

Season meters as of 157/365 = 60,705,989 m

Total meters on the day = 819,259 m

Oars in space (participation) = 32 percent

Meanwhile, the million meter watches continue onward. Will S posted an update to let us know that he's not quite eclipsed that 3 million meter mark yet, but he is just ahead of Jay and Cathie and Ron. Brett and Ron are now both past the 750K mark on the challenge.. and we've pulled ahead of Free Spirits by 2 MM posted meters.

Fall Team Challenge: Day 19 of 31

Post by Kona2 » October 4th, 2011, 7:10 pm

ImageImage

Total Challenge Meters = 16,076,305 m

We passed the previous year's accomplishments 4 million meters and a few days ago. I've said that this year's teams are special - not just the Luna-Tics Fall Challenge Team, or the year-round team, but teams in general. We're two-thirds of the way through the challenge as of today, and these graphs illustrate where we all are in terms of meter contributions. The Luna-Tics is definitely not your average team.

There are 5000 rowers registered for this challenge (as compared to 1700 for the World Erg Challenge). Amazing amounts of meters contributed thus far = 264 MILLION.

Here's a link to the individual contributors - with a big thanks for rowing with us !
