Congratulations! Well done!

As the picture displays, only the white boat and your heads are showing. It looks like you're in the water cooling off!

The Blacksmith wrote:I haven't posted for a while now, and thought I'd give an update. My son Kai and I competed in the Blackburn Challenge Saturday July 20th. We were in the work boat doubles class. 5 hours 13 minutes 15 sec. Utterly brutal race. 95 degrees, tide running the wrong way. Once we got throught the channel at Straitsmouth Island (halfway) we got a 15 knot headwind, and 2-3 foot rolling seas. 1-1/2 miles from the finish we got a big lightning storm-scary. But, we finished. Got first place in our class (only cause there was 2 boats in our class and 1 did not finish).
Wow! Over 5 hours in 95 degrees! Relentless! Another reason you're my hero! (Hope you took enough water with you in the boat!)

We didn't hear about blister size or post-race party this year. What gives?

Thanks Izz! It was a 2 gallon race. By the time we finished, I was done in. Kind of fell out of the boat and laid in the water until I came back to life a bit. Pretty much missed the party. Staggered up the beach, scarfed down a plate of food, loaded the boat with some help (couldn't face rowing 1/2 mile back to the boat ramp). 1 small blister on me, my son, Kai, had a couple. He was pretty well done in also. This pic is on the way to the start line. There was somewhere around 260 boats, 340 people. Everything from surf ski's to stand up paddleboards, and a 16 foot grumman canoe. 6 person outriggers, and traditional Grand Bank Dories. What impressed me most was there was a woman rowing a 19'6" Banks dory-weighs about 450 pounds conservatively. She finished in just over 6 hours. Talk about a heroic effort-she rowed like a champion. She was maybe 5'5", 130 pounds-maybe 40 years old. I don't think I could have finished in a Banks Dory. Truly an awesome athelete. The tan and green boat in the background is a Grand Banks dory-but it is a bit smaller that the one the woman I wrote about was using-solo, no less.

That was some serious rowing. I'll be thinking about your row when I'm out in the afternoon sun tomorrow. No complaints.
