I probably will--in fact, I can't see why I wouldn't. I like playing computer games, and solitaire and mahjonng have gotten a little olddamselfly wrote:Interesting to hear about your trial of Luminosity. Back to rowing: I did 2 sessions today, each 3 sets of 2.5K. I'll get back to migration metres just as soon as I can or my ice cream machine will have to stay in the depths of my deepest cupboard...arghhhhhhh.

I did see you had some bitchin' meters yesterday-- way to row!! From what I've been reading lately, physical exercise is one of the best ways to prevent mental degradation. I shudder to think what my senior moments would be like without all the working out I do. They're bad enough as it is!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
A race update! Finally! With exclamation points!
As many of you know, I decided to finally put myself into a racing shell this year. There are two rowing clubs in my area and I chose the one with the better web site, cheaper dues, and quieter lake. Plus, I kept running into its members at the YMCA (anyone that frequents the Y is okay in my book).
I did their Learn to Row class in March which consisted of learning about the boat itself, boathouse rules, safety, training, and finally some actual rowing. We spent a little bit of time in the water despite the cold and windy weather. They, of course, did not forget our flip test which involves purposely exiting a perfectly good boat and exposing oneself to lake water. Getting back into the boat under my own power earned me the privilege of rowing in a ‘supervised 3’ meaning that I could attend training session with the novices coach.
And train I did! I spent about 20 hours in my level 3 training shell in the 4 weeks before my first race. This was enough time to earn the right to row unsupervised, but not enough time to actually know what I was doing. Ignorance didn’t stop me from getting married or having kids so it sure wasn’t going to stop me from racing a boat!
The first race of the season was on our home course. The format was 1,000 meter sprints with 5 lanes. We had 375 entries from 19 clubs in 3 states. It was a great atmosphere with smiles all around. Of course, there was some serious racing as well.
Mixed in among the seasoned athletes was my group of ‘rec’ (stands for recreational) rowers. Some of you have heard the term 'novice' used to describe a first year rower. That's a formal racing classification and all novices race in a level 4 or 5 racing shell that is narrower, faster, and harder to keep upright. Rec rowers race in level 3 training shells which are hard (but not impossible) to flip. It is pretty much a class of competitive “athletes” without the skill/experience to row a real racing shell.
About 400 hours (maybe more like 30 minutes) before my race I launched from the dock and did about 2,000 meters in the warm-up area before being called to the stake boats. Those aren’t real boats. Ours were wooden docks setup at the beginning of each lane. A nice volunteer will hold your boat in place (once you FINALLY get it docked and straight) until the race starts. There was high wind so I had great difficulty lining up in my lane. I almost pulled the nice volunteer into the lake, but she proved more difficulty to pry free than she looked.
Once everyone was set, we heard the famous words: “Attention! Row!” We were off and I was doing well. Did I mention that I can’t row straight? That’s probably something worth noting. I spent most of my energy trying to stay in my lane. Despite this, I found myself rowing through the 3rd place boat with only 250 meters to go! I passed him just in time to start our sprint to the finish!!!
Considering that I started the race hoping only to 1) simply finish and 2) not flip my boat, I was starting to really warm to the idea of actually coming in 3rd. All I needed to do was turn it on and seal the deal. I felt great and had plenty of gas in the tank to power to the finish. Perhaps I could even come in 2nd since I had my back turned to the leaders and had no idea how close they were.
It would turn out that 1st and 2nd place were very safe from me. Instead of starting my sprint, I got a gentle reminder of my inexperience. I caught a crab. It completely stopped the boat. (You should be careful if you google ‘catching crabs’ at work since it might mean something different outside of a boat) The 3rd place rower did start his sprint. He did not catch a crab. He did not flip. There was no act of God on my behalf. Instead, he raced right past me and qualified for the final.
I was able to recover and finish ‘not last’. I’ll take that. Good day overall.

Finally!! I thought I was going to have to poke you again to get a report. Glad you came in "not last"!
Sounds like a pretty fun day, considering... and keeps me grateful that my erg is safely on dry land! No crabs on land!
Actually, it looks like you could lose a few teeth in one of these babies! Ouch!

Relatively speaking, Yes I'm feeling strong. I have a long ways to go, lots of doctors appointments and physical therapy sessions in my near future. I think I'm balancing my PT, Weight lifting, Running and rowing pretty well *knock on wood* I was talking to my physical therapist this morning, I don't know where I'd be without all the hard work I've been doing especially my rowing. I start my vestibular therapy on Monday. NOT looking forward to thatdamselfly wrote:
