Uh-oh!! Take it easy...

We need to form a rowing recovery group for all us folks recovering from rowing/other owies!

Well I'm having issue's. I can't seem to keep my butt where it needs to be on the seat so that I'm rowing correctly. The paresthesia I have in my legs is getting worse and after volunteering for 8 hours on Saturday night I'm dealing with it in my face and head as well. I've got a call into my neurologist and am waiting to hear back. I'll continue to get my mileage in the next few days however it will be little rows at a time. Maybe once I get back from Washington and have had 5 days completely off, things will be better. Anyway anyone have issue's with having a hard time keeping your center of gravity on the seat and if so is there anything I can do? Will getting a seat pad help keep my butt planted where it should?

Well, my advice is to get a bigger butt. I find that since my big butt hangs over each side of the seat, it prevents any slippage. A smaller butt will slide all over the seat. All kidding aside, they do sell seat pads made with a non-slip material. And they're softer, so it might be better for your nerves and back.

As to keeping the center of gravity in the right place, I think that's just a matter of constant monitoring of your form on each stroke until you have the hang of it and it comes naturally. I know some team members have taken rowing lessons so they may have better technique tips. I once asked what music people listened to while they row, and Cap'n Izzz responded that he doesn't listen to any; rather he constantly monitors his form and pace and numerous other factors. It was an interesting discussion.

Hope you heal up.

I can't IMAGINE rowing without a seat pad! Even though I come with all sorts of -- ahem -- "natural" padding. Search the forum for seat pad discussions -- some folks swear by a layer or two of bubble wrap as a cheap and easy solution. I have a kneeling pad for use in gardening, similar to what is pictured below. I cover it with a towel for comfort.

I'm into rowing comfort, which I'm sure makes Cap'n Izz's eyes roll!

Good luck with the paresthesia. Take time off if you need it!

until recently rowing came VERY naturally to me. My form though not perfect was very nice and solid. I'm HOPING that maybe a pad will help but I have a feeling that won't be the case.. I've got some neurological issue's that seem to be progressing and numbness from my feet up to my butt is one of them. I've been pretty good at being stubborn and not letting my issue's get in the way however it's getting harder and harder.

THanks!

I'm hoping the time off that I'll be taking while on vacation starting Thursday helps! I may have to try the bubble wrap just to see. The only discomfort I get during rowing is the mental part of trying to keep butt and feet where they need to be which is something I haven't had to worry about until the past 5 days or so. Thanks Lisa!

My first OTW race is 20 days away. I have spent my time tightening oarlocks, backing into docks, catching crabs, river turns, pause drills, avoiding juniors, creating blisters, and other novice activities. I'm trying my best to erg for you, but a meter on the water still feels like 10 on the erg. I am still x-training in the pool and I try to remember to stretch. The only milestone of note is that I just ordered my first uni from JLracing. Otherwise, my coach has me busy enough to not erg like I used to, but not busy enough to be confident that I'll medal at the sprint trials.

Hi!

I have myself dealt with something called piriformis syndrome, which means a tight muscle in your butt :) is pressing on the sciatic nerve. I resolved that by stretching and by relaxing my psoas muscles (under your abs) by lying on a small hard medicine ball until that muscle got loose. That might help you too!!

I don't know if that is a good idea, but for you guys I'll make it happen. You will likely get a race pic first as the uni is a good 4 weeks out. I'm racing in the rec division and will likely get a pass for not being in the proper club uniform.
