TMike wrote: You'll catch me pretty quick I seem to have hit a plateau. The record attempt today was a full out assault on the 5K, I gave it all I had. It wasn't much of an improvement over my last 5K record. I'm hoping that a month of March Madness will take me out of my slump. --- My last 10K record was 12/16/2012. I'll blame it on the weather. After all I did get some temporary frost bite damage to the tops of my ears in Denver during a minus 4 degree row.
My hat is off to you, Mike. I can't imagine rowing in many of the climates that you seem to find yourself in these days! And you are still improving despite the temperatures and altitudes. Keep up the great work! :)

I've not set a PR since Nov. 26, when I did a 5K in 17:17.5. My last 10K PR was on Sep. 25, when I rowed it in 35:45.8. But for the last few months I've had a series of minor ailments which pretty much took the wind out of my sails. I'm still chugging along, but I have had no inclination to try for a PR of any distance. I'm hoping by the end of this month to get back to it.

Not to mention the extra five or six holiday pounds I've seemed to acquire. :? I imagine moving an extra five or six pounds repetitiously back and forth on the rower can mean the difference between setting a new PR, or just coming close. Hopefully I can drop these by the end of the month also.

When I heard you were an ultra-runner, I started looking up the endurance records for women 40-50 - 100Ks... 24-hour rows... full marathons... But with you having a back issue, I guess I'll have to wait... lol

Considering that every footfall lands with about 2.5x your body weight, and sends shock waves through your knees, hips, lower back, I can see why a doc would be cautious about sending you out there to run again!
You probably should work on smoothness & flow of each stroke, so you don't send shock waves through your hands, elbows, shoulders & back (or knees, hips & back if you hyper-extend your knees). Rowing's a great "core" exercise, so it could be great for you if done right!

I haven't looked to how my form is though I have to say it feels very fluid. I feel like rowing comes naturally to me, of course I could be wrong. I guess I should spend some time today seeing about form since I seem to think I'm up for the 10k a day for March Madness. Don't think I have to worry about my core. My physical therapist has me doing so much core work (to work on my proprioception) that between that and rowing my 6 pack is getting a lot more definition

Thanks for the advice!

Just dropping in to say hi. Having been to consistent of late with my rowing. Playing adult soccer has shifted my exercise regimen a bit. Trying to develop my running again and sprinting seems to be a whole new set of muscles. I've been sore for 2 months straight lol

Hope everyone is doing well I will probably be using the rower for warm-ups and interval training but not much more than that until I feel I am getting close to my fitness goals for soccer.

I try to stop in and stay caught up every week or so. Feel free to shoot me a reminder before the next team challenge.

Ciao!

Ahoy, maties!! It's time to sign up for the World Erg Challenge!!! For our newer rowers, participation in this event takes a signup process. Our group actually consists of two entities -- the year-round affiliation TimBukTOO, and the challenge team TimBukTWO. To participate in the WEC, you need be a part of the latter. To join, follow the instructions on this page.

Even if you have joined our challenge team in the past, you will still need to click a link on that page to confirm that you want to participate in WEC 2013. To check your participation, see the team roster.

The challenge starts March 15th, so don't delay!! Cap'n Izz is digging his cat-o-nine-tails out of storage and warming up his flogging arm!

I actually ended up signing up for this BEFORE I actually got signed up with the group go figure. I of course LOVE challenges! Guess I better toughen up so I can handle the flogging I may incur

Being new to rowing sure has it's advantages. Just pr'd yet again in the 5k. This time I actually had the right program set up so in the end I could rank it (didn't set out to PR since I rowed long yesterday). Wonder how long this will last

Congratulations! You'll probably PR a lot at first, and then the "law of diminished returns" kicks in, especially if you find yourself up above the 95% percentile. But with proper training you should make steady gains for a long, long time. I know Andy (Quatroux) was doing the Wolverine Plan and he made some great gains. And there's also a Pete Plan. And there's probably a Cap'n Izzzmeister Plan; if there isn't, there should be. He is a great resource for advice on rowing technique and strategy.

This is a very addicting exercise, especially if you are competitive. These boards and online ranking applications are very motivating.

Good luck!

I'm fairly certain it's something along the lines of "Row like hell till you puke".

Thanks! I've actually checked out both the Pete Plan as well as the Wolverine and am hoping I get clearance from surgeon to start doing interval work on the rower next week. I'd be interested in the Cap'n Izzymeister plan is there is one HINT HINT. Of course I doubt I'd get into any training plan until after the WEC. I Figure like running a good base is just as important in rowing

Well hopefully I'm better at this with rowing than I am with running. I have this way of pushing about 85-90% percent during a race managing to not only have my fastest pace the last part of the race but a smile on my face as well. I plan on fixing that this year. I swear I'm going to learn to work so hard I either feel like puking or I actually do!

If you're going for distance-do the marathon plan-some of the world record holders use it(Izz pointed me in that direction)
