So Jan and Gina, you guys are absolutely correct: on water meters must be done facing backwards and they don't count for much. I could install outrigger oarlocks on my canoe and get a stiff neck by rowing and facing backward in it. And I'm sure my 17.5' long x 27.5" waterline width solo canoe would just scream through the water if it was set up for rowing. But I'm not going to do that....

Congrats to you AJ. I haven't had much time to row lately. I've been scouting out a job transfer to Phoenix, hope to get some rowing done later this week. I thought you all might be interested in a web site to send your name to the moon. Since I'm a new user this forum won't let me post a URL. If you Google 'send your name to the moon' you'll get the site. You just sign up to send your name to the moon. Names will be collected and placed onboard the LRO spacecraft for its historic mission bringing NASA back to the moon. You will also receive a certificate showcasing your support of the mission. It's kinda neat I'm sure the kids will get a kick out of it.

Mitch,
Thanks for the heads up on "send your name to the moon". It's a cool site and the certificate is nice:suitable for framing, as they say. I'm # 590,703. See you all on the moon.

Actually, the waterlines of a canoe and a scull are very different. A scull has long skinny ends and a canoe has short blunt ends. Racing a scull involves hanging all your weight on the oars and lifting the shell out of the water. This feeling can be duplicated on the erg, get going fast enough to lift yourself off the seat and hang on the handle. When racing, we used to tape our shorts to the seat, so we wouldn't lose the seat on the drive.
Enough technical stuff. Darryl, thanks for the meters and happy paddling this summer. Don't hit any icebergs.

Jan - cute graphic!
Yes, little loops of duct tape kept us in our seats. We usually rowed in track shorts, spandex bike shorts hadn't been invented yet! This was in the late 70's - anyone remember Dolphin shorts??

I am pretty sure (although I will defer to our Minnesotan experts) that the duct tape photo above qualifies for an
