Been doing the marathon training with the HR monitor. Thought I was in decent shape-now I find out differently . I can get my heart rate to the range the training guide says-but to get the right stokes per minute AND keep my heart rate where it is supposed to be-good luck to that. So, I am shooting for the right heart rate, then will work towards both the right HR and SPM as time goes by.

I am starting to wonder if I will continue running after all this. I might do a 5k before I quit, but I really don't see it as long-term exercise for me.

Yes, you'll improve quickly, because you really do have the aerobic capacity. It usually takes to my 3rd spring bike ride to get my mojo back, but that's just getting all those muscles used to the different stress.Quatroux wrote:Still running and swimming. And MARK E, that goes for you too - you'll be surprised how fast your heart rate gets in the range, since you have been rowing. When I was doing 25K's based on HR - which means I'm forced to slow down if my heart speeds up - my first one was 107 minutes. Second one was 103, then 101, then 99. Your heart just has to figure out what the new game is, and adjust to it.

Now I know why heart rate training is more effective-it makes you work MUCH harder. For me, it does give me a little extra "push" as I see my heart rate slow and "encourages" me to work a bit harder.

New to team and thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Pam, I started rowing in October due to being told I couldn't do much of anything else due to Spinal Cord compression. Had major surgery in early Dec and was able to get back to rowing in mid January. I absolutely LOVE rowing and am looking forward to doing some challenges.

Welcome and good luck with the surgery recovery. I've had a disc removed (lowest one down), and I'm convinced that rowing is what keeps me relatively pain free and able to do my artwork. Spinal surgery and being a Artist-Blacksmith usually don't do well together.

Thanks! I had 2 discs removed in my neck. And like spinal surgery doesn't work well with being a Artist-Blacksmith it sure doesn't go well with being an Ultra Runner. I had to stop running after my surgery (not that I was anything close to an ultrarunner), but have filled the spaces with other fun stuff.
