Bas Rutten has developed a breathing device which is similar to what Bazzy is describing.

This is called the o2 trainer and it was designed to strengthen the lung and breathing muscles for athletes.

Image

probably a good device but i haven't used it. Most of the top MMA guys are starting to use stuff like this to increase their cardio capacity.

http://o2trainer.com

I've even seen people use gas masks for their mma training.

http://fightercorner.com/gas-mask-training-for-mma

video of gas mask training. look for the guy on the erg :D

I always kind of liked wearing my gas mask in a weird sort of way. Made me feel a little like Darth Vader.

Baz's posting, and the subsequent ones on breathing device and gas mask usage, have surely sent me down a bunny trail of the mind. As one who has asthma, I wondered about how the breathing devices would impact the outflow of the air....since that is what can be a struggle anyway.

I listened to a podcast with Bas Rutten the creater of the o2 trainer and he used a similar technique that would restrict his breathing in order to strengthen his lungs when he was younger in order to help his asthma.
He says now that he has no asthma. According to the reading that i've done on similar products almost all of them say that those devices open up alternate breathing pathways in the lungs which will help one overcome asthma.
again, those are just product and developer claims. i don't really know anyone who used it and says that their asthma was cured.

I'd love to use the 02 trainer. it comes with different restricter plates in order to work your way up the cardio ladder. i think something like that could help someone improve their cardio.

I'm glad the topic was of interest, as I like the ‘science’ of exercise and I think it is good to measure where you are at, where you want to go, and track the progress (I've been corporatised over a long period - tragic  )

K2 raises the question of asthma and how it might impact rowers. I understand that these types of devices were designed with the intention of aiding asthma sufferers. And to quote from the ‘Power Breathe’ article on the Concept website written by Eddie Fletcher, of Fletcher Sports Science.

Cheers, BBB

This guide is written for those training to improve their 2000 m race or time trial performance.
It is specifically aimed at age group rowers who are in physiological decline and want to
maximise or improve their performance by strengthening their breathing muscles using the
POWERbreathe (http://www.powerbreathe.com) inspiratory muscle trainer. The benefits of
POWERbreathe apply equally to elite athletes as they do to recreational indoor rowers.

My own interest stems from my breathing (asthmatic) problems which constant use of the
POWERbreathe has greatly ameliorated. It occurred to me that if it could have such a dramatic effect on my meagre performance then the potential for athletic performance was huge.

People with asthma have narrow lung airways, which increases the resistance to breathing,
and increases the work demanded of the inspiratory muscles during exercise: the logic of
training these muscles seemed obvious to me as a coach. It also seemed logical to me that
rowers struggling to breathe, particularly where maximal effort is involved would benefit from
having stronger breathing muscles. If you happen to be an asthmatic rower you will see a
significant improvement in your breathing effort very quickly.

When I checked the scientific and medical literature for information about inspiratory muscle
training (IMT) I was delighted to see that not only was there good evidence that IMT improved
asthma symptoms1 but also that it improved performance in highly trained young oarswomen2 and cyclists3. This strengthened my conviction that IMT was something that all my rowers should incorporate into their training.

T-Shirts for the Moon Landing

Post by Kona2 » March 30th, 2011, 10:59 am

So far, the only tee shirt designed was the one that is pictured on page 1 of the team pages! Our resident artist is an independent minded fellow...but perhaps he might help us out with a lunar landing tee shirt. Perhaps.

Wow, Ron, what a picture! Is this outside your front door?

I love the idea of an official moon landing commemorative tee shirt with the date of our landing on it. It could be posted on Cafepress, and people could order as desired. If AJ came up with a design and put it up for sale on Cafepress, I would certainly support his getting the profit for his efforts. What say you, AJ?

And a big Woot to you, David, on reaching 2 Million Meters! Way to Row!

Hey Ron - thanks for all your great rowing. Way to lead the pack!

But...if you get to live in Vermont, you deserve to move your erg outside. Think how hard you'll have to row to keep warm! And the scenery looks worth it! But...you'll have to add a heating element to enrage's O2 Trainer so it won't plug up with ice.
