I have to remark on the "power of the team," and our astrogator's unflagging motivational posts. I had to work all weekend and was in a particularly tired and snarky "poor me" mode tonight. Before limping off to bed with a new book and a questionable attitude, I read the team page ... and then absolutely had to row instead ... I feel much better now, thankyouverymuch!

Just a note of explanation to all, though - the Lunie distance awards are based on what that day's upload looks like - even if your meters are an accumulation of several days, the team piggy bank gets credit on THAT day of upload....so the moons, giants, etc., get awarded on that day (even when I know that it's an accumulation of meters - which I generally don't since I can't "see" the individual days or rowing sessions within a day - unless you have the Facebook app - and then I can and do :D ). It's all for fun - and of course you deserve a red giant!

Thanks for the back slapping folks, and congratulations Dave on 3M season and Mitch on 6M lifetime...

I had been hoping to try and reach 5M for the season, and whilst possible it would appear to be unlikely as I’d be batting well above my average to do it... But I’ve set a 6M goal for next season!

And whilst still on the topic of vegemite I eat it everyday so might be something in it, but keep it quiet won’t be enough to go around if 300M+ North Americans start eating a white crusty roll with butter and vegemite every day (having mine now!)... did I hear someone say little chance of that?....

Although, I could easily go the “Breakfast of Chumpions” – oats, maple syrup, and maybe some cream (for energy of course!)...

Good rowing to all...

Cheers, BBB

I was playing around with some ‘stats’ today to ascertain what sort of improvement I have been getting over the past 5 months.

In November I commenced doing 10,000M intervals for endurance, and although I have rowed other distances during this time I have only included the 10,000M intervals for this analysis. Just under 50% of the intervals have been done as 2 x 10,000M intervals per session, with a 2 minute rest between each interval.

I’m sure there are many factors that potentially make up the improvement, increasing the distance should (hopefully) increase the endurance and improve the time. But what I found very interesting was the improvement over the past month. Many will recall earlier this month we discussed breathing technique while rowing, and this is something I have focussed heavily on over the past 6 weeks.

I also have been using a ‘power breathe’ device to strengthen the breathing muscles. This involves breathing through a tube that inhibits the air flow via a spring loaded valve, so you have to breathe ‘hard’ to get the air, the theory being it will strenghten your breathing muscles.

And if you take a look at the improvement in the 500m/split during March there has been a marked improvement in the splits. Now I don’t go out to row each session as hard as I can, and do follow a program, but during March I have recorded a PB of 1:56.9/500M split for 10,000M, and improved the average split by 2% versus February.

I think two things in play; the breathing has improved dramtically, and this has given me both the oxygen flow, and confidence to push harder. I can't recall the improvment they spoke about in the research, but it was in this range over a four week period from memory. I've been using it for almost 4 weeks now....

Phew... a bit long winded, but thought it might be of interest for those looking to improve times and endurance. If all else fails...try vegemite.
