Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
When I did the CRASH-Bs two years ago, I did all the final-week tapering stuff - mileage down, intensity up, lots of race pace or better, etc. Then, I did virtually the same time I'd done the week before: 6:42.5, when I'd done 6:42.6 ten days before in Indy for my coach!Quatroux wrote:I was thinking that myself.damselfly wrote:Andy I - 7,942 Shouldn't you be tapering for SWEAT?
Afterwards, I did more reading about tapering, and they gave the following guidelines: If you're in peak, peak shape, then taper. If you think you could still improve by continuing your program, do so - just make sure to take enough rest (sleeping + perhaps an extra day off) before the race.
This year, being 18 pounds (8.2kg) heavier than last year (thanks to a wonderful NY vacation months ago), and having lost a week of training 3 weeks before the race, I'll personally be training almost up to the race (and "through" the race, aiming to peak about March 15). I guess anything below 6:50 would thrill me, at this weight.
Here are my racing guidelines: First 12-15 strokes at full power (half stroke, half, three-quarters, three-quarters, then about 10 more hard strokes), then slowly let your pace slow to your expected pace. Hold that pace, almost no-matter-what.
(TWO VIEWS: Some coaches like to stick another round of 15 power strokes in the middle, maybe from 1,150m out to 1K out, then get back to your regular race pace. Mike Caviston, among others, says you ultimately lose meters that way, as you slow down afterwards to recuperate. Too late to experiment now.)
If, at 1,500 you feel strong, you can up the speed by .5s or 1s/500m. Probably start your sprint at 1,750m, really turn on the after-burners the final 100m. (Even if working at such an oxygen deficit is too much, it's very rare that you can't at least keep the handle moving for another 5 or 10 strokes, even if it's a bit slower.)
Puking your guts up after the race is a sign of manliness, buckets are provided at these races... Okay, I've never puked, but I've run around my apartment like a chicken with its head cut off trying to catch my breath. After races, though, I've never had to do that, since I race conservatively, prioritizing finishing over setting PBs.

To those of you suffering time warp distortion ("It's just a jump... to the left..."), our daily posts got discombobulated on the way over the Interwebs. Here is a link back to Thursday's numbers...Izzzmeister wrote:All hands on deck, trying to outpace influenza! 24 of 66 members (36%) logged 280,155 total meters Wednesday! You have a coach?!?!?! That's a good post, but I had to latch on to one thing and I chose that.Izzzmeister wrote:I'd done 6:42.6 ten days before in Indy for my coach!

I tried to taper myself, but the VTC got in the way. I love these challenges, but all I did this month was row junk meters. It is my fault for rowing them, but I could have gained much more if I had stuck to the WP.
![Evil or Very Mad ](./images/smilies/icon_evil.gif)
I've thought about doing Xeno Muller's 2k approach, negative splits, or just steady pace. I have instead decided to drink a cup of coffee and go beast mode the whole 2k

During the last 500m my heart will explode and they will cancel this race faster than ESPN's safety review of the X Games (which will be brief).
![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
I'm actually going to do your plan and I'll start my sprint depending on how I feel. I think it will be early (500m) as I really think I'll be much faster than my last 2k. I will not be doing a power 10 or anything along the way.

I had a great time racing today. I'll spare you the full story (it is here: http://www.c2forum.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 07#p185507), but I set a new PR of 7:39.9. It was amazing. I could do that again 99 times and not get that last fraction of a second to be under 7:40.

Congrats Andy on your PB. Great job. Well get some rest before our next challenge, but I am heading over to do the military challenge I need to get my meters in if I am ever going to get my goal. I will be back after this one is over.
